Antipsychotics are a class of medication that is primarily used to treat symptoms of psychosis, like hearing and seeing things that other people do not, feeling paranoid, or having delusions.
Antipsychotics work by blocking dopamine in the brain, which helps reduce the frequency and severity of psychotic symptoms.
Brexpiprazole (Rexulti) is used along with other medications to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) or depression. It is also used to treat schizophrenia and agitation due to dementia in people with Alzheimer’s disease.
Yes, taking brexpiprazole may cause weight gain—in studies of the medication, this was a common side effect. Brexpiprazole may also cause reduced appetite, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea, which can cause some weight loss if they are serious. If you’re concerned about weight gain or loss with brexpiprazole treatment, talk with your provider. They can give you more information about the likelihood of weight changes with the medication.
Although brexpiprazole starts working soon after you take a dose, it may take a few weeks of treatment before you notice an improvement in your condition. How long it takes brexpiprazole to work also depends on your response to treatment, the severity of your condition, your dosage, and other individual factors. Your provider will monitor you during treatment and may adjust your dose if needed to manage your condition.
No, brexpiprazole is not a controlled substance. It is not habit-forming and is not known to cause addiction. If you have other questions about how brexpiprazole works, talk with your provider or pharmacist to learn more.
Brexpiprazole is not approved for anxiety. It is used along with other medications to treat major depressive disorder, as well as schizophrenia and agitation from dementia in people with Alzheimer’s disease. However, some people with depression may also have anxiety. Some studies have shown people with depression and anxiety who took brexpiprazole saw improvements in both conditions. However, in other cases, brexpiprazole treatment may cause an increase in anxiety. If you have questions about the effectiveness of brexpiprazole for anxiety, talk with your provider.
Brexpiprazole isn’t known to cause withdrawal symptoms. However, do not suddenly stop taking the medication without talking to your provider. Suddenly stopping the medication could lead to a worsening of your condition. If you’d like to stop brexpiprazole, talk with your provider about your options to do so safely.
The time of day you take brexpiprazole depends on how the medication affects you and what dosing schedule works for you. Brexpiprazole may cause tiredness, sleepiness, and dizziness, so if you experience these side effects, you may want to take brexpiprazole in the evening. It’s important to take the medication around the same time every day—this will help the medication keep working consistently to treat your condition. Follow your provider’s directions on the time of day to take brexpiprazole.
