Starting Psychiatry/medication

What is psychiatry?

Psychiatry is a branch of medicine that focuses specifically on the medical and psychotherapeutic treatment of mental conditions and disorders.

How does psychiatry work?

Psychiatry allows people struggling to manage mental conditions or disorders to get access to medications that will make daily functioning easier, as well as work through any mental factors that might be causing or worsening their condition. Though medications can't cure mental disorders, medication can make symptoms more manageable, making the process of psychotherapeutic treatment easier and more effective. Psychiatric care can be available through in-person psychiatry and online psychiatry, depending on where you live and your own preferences. However, psychiatric providers at Thriveworks in Tucson, AZ specifically offer online psychiatry to their clients.

Does psychiatry deal with anxiety?

Psychiatrists are among the mental health professionals who can prescribe anxiety medication, and they are also capable of offering therapeutic treatment for anxiety as well, though not every psychiatric professional offers therapy. Medication management can be offered via in-person or online psychiatry.

What is the difference between a mental health therapist and psychiatrist?

A therapist has an education specifically rooted in therapeutic practice, approaches, techniques, and treatment. They cannot prescribe medications for clients, thought they often refer clients to psychiatrists for medication management. Psychiatrists are medically trained doctors who specialize in mental health treatment, mainly through medication management and prescription, though they can also practice therapy.

What's the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist?

Psychologists and psychiatrists receive differing educations, as psychologists are not medically trained the same way that psychiatrists are. Psychologists mainly specialize in providing therapy services and diagnoses for mental disorders — something that most therapists cannot provide — while psychiatrists manage medications and sometimes provide therapy services. The main difference is that psychologists (generally) cannot prescribe medications the way psychiatrists can.

Do psychiatric NPs treat mental disorders?

Psychiatric nurse practitioners (NPs) treat and diagnose disorders, prescribe and manage medications, and offer psychotherapy services, too.

How do psychiatriac providers diagnose?

Oftentimes, psychiatrists or psychiatric professionals will perform a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation, which involves an in-depth discussion about your symptoms, medical history, and current medications. Once they reach a diagnosis, they may suggest starting certain medications depending on your condition and the intensity of your symptoms.

Is psychiatry/medication conducted in person or online?

At Thriveworks, we offer online psychiatry as well as in-person therapy services for optimal comfort and convenience.

How long does psychiatry last?

Psychiatric services at Thriveworks Tucson can last for as little or as much time as the client needs to reach their treatment goals, whether that be a month or two or over the course of years. treatment length is heavily dependent on the condition(s) being treated, the course of treatment, and the client's goals for treatment.

Need more help deciding?

Psychiatry is a specialized mental health field that focuses on treating the body as well as the mind. The resources and perspective psychiatric professionals can give to their patients can be very effective in alleviating harmful symptoms and adjusting detrimental behavior, with the goal of using medicine to improve people’s mental health.

Thriveworks Counseling & Psychiatry Tuscon can give you excellent psychiatric care through our many psychiatric nurse practitioners (NPs). Our NPs at Thriveworks Tucson will use their expertise to listen to your concerns and give you the support and assistance you need to start living the life you want to live.

What Is Psychiatry?

Psychiatry is a mental health field that focuses on diagnosing and treating mental health conditions and disorders. Psychiatrists themselves are medical doctors that specialize in mental health and treat behavioral, mental, and emotional conditions.

What makes psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners different from counselors and therapists is that their training and education allows them to prescribe medications to their patients. Psychiatrists and psychiatric NPs can also be licensed counselors, but their medical backgrounds are what enable them to prescribe medication.

Psychiatrists professionals combine their strong medical backgrounds and their knowledge of and access to medication to treat a wide array of mental health conditions. They can perform psychological tests to assess your condition, present you with treatment options, and discuss next steps for your treatment.

Is Psychiatry Right for Me?

If you are struggling with your mental health and are seeking help, a psychiatrist might be a good fit for you, especially if you believe that bodily or medical issues may be playing a strong part.

There are many signs that someone might need psychiatric care, though mental health struggles will look different in everyone. Some examples of reasons why people seek mental health care include:

  • Intense changes in mood; severe emotional outbursts
  • Extreme worry or anxiety
  • Panic attacks
  • Delusions or hallucinations
  • Drastic changes in sleeping habits
  • Changes in eating habits; issues with body image
  • Trouble with motivation, concentration, and memory
  • Feelings of despair, hopelessness, or worthlessness
  • Extreme mental and physical fatigue
  • Grief
  • Experiencing a traumatic event
  • Self-harm
  • Substance abuse

These are some of the most common reasons why people might seek psychiatry, but even if you may be considering it for other reasons, reach out to a mental health professional about your concerns.

I've enjoyed my time and experience with Paulina. She's professional, informative and engaging. She took the time to ask necessary questions to understand my situation and symptoms. Paulina prescribed medication that has helped me manage my symptoms and I'm extremely grateful. This medication has helped more than anything I've ever tried, and her support has allowed me to gain mental clarity and my self-confidence back. I HIGHLY recommend Paulina and am grateful for her time.

I've been a client at Thriveworks now for at least 6 months now and I have to say I've been pleasantly surprised. In this day and age where access to affordable Healthcare is a scarcity, Thriveworks has giving me some hope. Overall, Thriveworks has proven to be affordable and effective as well as reliable and responsive. My counselor Bridget has helped me open up and is teaching me coping skills and boundary setting and I feel as though I have already grown both mentally and emotionally in just these past 6 months. Bridget is reliable, a great listener and gives honest, insightful feedback along with healthy suggestions on how I might handkerchief things better the next time. Since being a patient of Bridget, I often now stop myself from my old unhealthy ways of doing things, taking a moment to reflect on what I'm learning from her and then move forward in a more positive healthy way with whatever issue I was struggling with. As for my therapist Paulina, she too had proven to me that she is listening, genuinely cares and wants to help me. As a former pharmacy tech and now a licensed nurse, it is apparent to me that Paulina is very knowledgeable when it comes to prescribing meds and puts effort and thought into helping her patients. Since being a client of Paulina, I now finally have my anxiety under control. I finally feel relief! Finding relief from my anxiety is something I have found to be a major challenge for many years with previous psych drs. I'm grateful I have found both Bridget and Paulina!

Blanca worked in our school as a school counselor and working with students in K-8th grade in a 1:1 setting. She worked with students who came from diverse backgrounds: divorced parents, incarcerated parents, no parents, homelessness, etc. The students she met with maintained a noticeably strengthened sense of self. Blanca also helped these students to develop strong coping skills in order to help the students self regulate throughout the school day. We would be happy to have her work in our school again.
