Starting Psychiatry/medication

What is psychiatry?

Psychiatry is a branch of medicine that focuses specifically on the medical and psychotherapeutic treatment of mental conditions and disorders.

How does psychiatry work?

Psychiatry allows people struggling to manage mental conditions or disorders to get access to medications that will make daily functioning easier, as well as work through any mental factors that might be causing or worsening their condition. Though medications can't cure mental disorders, medication can make symptoms more manageable, making the process of psychotherapeutic treatment easier and more effective. Psychiatric care can be available through in-person psychiatry and online psychiatry, depending on where you live and your own preferences. However, psychiatric providers at Thriveworks in Framingham, MA specifically offer online psychiatry to their clients.

Does psychiatry deal with anxiety?

Psychiatrists are among the mental health professionals who can prescribe anxiety medication, and they are also capable of offering therapeutic treatment for anxiety as well, though not every psychiatric professional offers therapy. Medication management can be offered via in-person or online psychiatry.

What is the difference between a mental health therapist and psychiatrist?

A therapist has an education specifically rooted in therapeutic practice, approaches, techniques, and treatment. They cannot prescribe medications for clients, thought they often refer clients to psychiatrists for medication management. Psychiatrists are medically trained doctors who specialize in mental health treatment, mainly through medication management and prescription, though they can also practice therapy.

What's the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist?

Psychologists and psychiatrists receive differing educations, as psychologists are not medically trained the same way that psychiatrists are. Psychologists mainly specialize in providing therapy services and diagnoses for mental disorders — something that most therapists cannot provide — while psychiatrists manage medications and sometimes provide therapy services. The main difference is that psychologists (generally) cannot prescribe medications the way psychiatrists can.

Do psychiatric NPs treat mental disorders?

Psychiatric nurse practitioners (NPs) treat and diagnose disorders, prescribe and manage medications, and offer psychotherapy services, too.

How do psychiatriac providers diagnose?

Oftentimes, psychiatrists or psychiatric professionals will perform a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation, which involves an in-depth discussion about your symptoms, medical history, and current medications. Once they reach a diagnosis, they may suggest starting certain medications depending on your condition and the intensity of your symptoms.

Is psychiatry/medication conducted in person or online?

At Thriveworks, we offer online psychiatry as well as in-person therapy services for optimal comfort and convenience.

How long does psychiatry last?

Psychiatric services at Thriveworks Framingham can last for as little or as much time as the client needs to reach their treatment goals, whether that be a month or two or over the course of years. treatment length is heavily dependent on the condition(s) being treated, the course of treatment, and the client's goals for treatment.

Need more help deciding?

Many people struggle with mental health conditions and challenges in life that are hard to overcome. One day everything may be going great and the next, you are coping with the diagnosis of a life-threatening disease. Maybe your parents are going through a divorce and it’s giving you anxiety. You might have just broken up with your significant other of five years. Luckily, counseling is readily available and designed to help people work through these challenges and learn how to manage future problems. However, for some people, counseling is only part of the treatment process. Psychiatrists and nurse practitioners who are trained and certified can help their clients better overcome their mental illnesses through medication management.

And every person can benefit from talking to somebody. I’m the most anti-medication person, but some people need medicine and there was a time where I needed some too.” –Miley Cyrus

It’s hard to know when the right time is to take medication for your mental illness. As Miley said, medicine can benefit you when you are going through something tough and need that little extra help. Here at Thriveworks Counseling in Framingham, we are happy to offer our clients online medication management. Our psychiatrists and nurse practitioners can help you from the comfort of your home. If you are experiencing a mental health condition and feel like you might benefit from the use of medication, consider reaching out (508) 392-4269.

Would I Benefit from Medication Management?

Medication management ensures that our clients are safely taking the medication that is prescribed to them. Our psychiatrists and nurse practitioners determine what medication is right for you, how often you should take it, how much you should take, and if you should eat when taking your medication. Most people assume that only the most severe cases of mental illness require medication, however, even people with mild cases can see great benefits of taking prescribed medicine. Consider these different situations:

  1. Jessica experienced a great deal of trauma in her childhood. She was abused, lived in foster care for most of her childhood, and never felt accepted. Now as an adult with her own family, she still struggles with the trauma she endured all of those years ago. This causes her to be overly protective of her children and feels extreme anxiety when she’s away from them for too long. Coupled with her symptoms of PTSD, Jessica just wishes she could live a normal life.
  2. Matt severely injured one of his arms when working out one day which has caused him to wear a sling for several months. When he noticed that years of progress he’s made working out slowly started to slip away, it caused him to fall into a depression. He knows that when he’s able to start working out again, he’ll start to feel better, but it’s hard for him to think positively about the future.

Jessica and Matt are battling two very different extremes of their mental illnesses. While it’s clear that Jessica could greatly benefit from taking a medication, Matt could still find a prescription to help him hurdle the obstacle in his way. If medication is the right option for you, it’s important to disclose any of your health histories to ensure the wrong medication is not prescribed. Also let your Thriveworks Framingham psychiatrist know if any medication you are currently taking, any allergies you have now or have had in the past, and make sure to ask any questions you may have prior to starting a new medication.

Benefits of Working with an Online Psychiatrist

It is hard to start counseling sometimes, let alone a new medication. We want to help ease your mind and answer any questions you have along the way. Our psychiatrists and nurse practitioners dedicate themselves to being a partner in your mental health journey and encourage you to be open and honest about what you are feeling. When taking medication is the right path for you, your psychiatrist might prescribe a mood stabilizer, cognitive enhancer, or antidepressant. There are many different types of medications, and that’s why it’s important to work with a professional to manage them.

Working with a psychiatrist online has a lot of benefits that go beyond the task of managing your medication. Online counseling allows you to speak with your provider from wherever is the most convenient for you. In addition, online appointments are comfortable, easy, and affordable. We understand that your schedule can get busy and it can be hard to find time to schedule appointments. Here at Thriveworks Counseling in Framingham, we have a broad range of appointment times so you can find something that best fits your needs.
