Starting Psychiatry/medication

What is psychiatry?

Psychiatry is a branch of medicine that focuses specifically on the medical and psychotherapeutic treatment of mental conditions and disorders.

How does psychiatry work?

Psychiatry allows people struggling to manage mental conditions or disorders to get access to medications that will make daily functioning easier, as well as work through any mental factors that might be causing or worsening their condition. Though medications can't cure mental disorders, medication can make symptoms more manageable, making the process of psychotherapeutic treatment easier and more effective. Psychiatric care can be available through in-person psychiatry and online psychiatry, depending on where you live and your own preferences. However, psychiatric providers at Thriveworks in Joliet, IL specifically offer online psychiatry to their clients.

Does psychiatry deal with anxiety?

Psychiatrists are among the mental health professionals who can prescribe anxiety medication, and they are also capable of offering therapeutic treatment for anxiety as well, though not every psychiatric professional offers therapy. Medication management can be offered via in-person or online psychiatry.

What is the difference between a mental health therapist and psychiatrist?

A therapist has an education specifically rooted in therapeutic practice, approaches, techniques, and treatment. They cannot prescribe medications for clients, thought they often refer clients to psychiatrists for medication management. Psychiatrists are medically trained doctors who specialize in mental health treatment, mainly through medication management and prescription, though they can also practice therapy.

What's the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist?

Psychologists and psychiatrists receive differing educations, as psychologists are not medically trained the same way that psychiatrists are. Psychologists mainly specialize in providing therapy services and diagnoses for mental disorders — something that most therapists cannot provide — while psychiatrists manage medications and sometimes provide therapy services. The main difference is that psychologists (generally) cannot prescribe medications the way psychiatrists can.

Do psychiatric NPs treat mental disorders?

Psychiatric nurse practitioners (NPs) treat and diagnose disorders, prescribe and manage medications, and offer psychotherapy services, too.

How do psychiatriac providers diagnose?

Oftentimes, psychiatrists or psychiatric professionals will perform a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation, which involves an in-depth discussion about your symptoms, medical history, and current medications. Once they reach a diagnosis, they may suggest starting certain medications depending on your condition and the intensity of your symptoms.

Is psychiatry/medication conducted in person or online?

At Thriveworks, we offer online psychiatry as well as in-person therapy services for optimal comfort and convenience.

How long does psychiatry last?

Psychiatric services at Thriveworks Joliet can last for as little or as much time as the client needs to reach their treatment goals, whether that be a month or two or over the course of years. treatment length is heavily dependent on the condition(s) being treated, the course of treatment, and the client's goals for treatment.

Need more help deciding?

As a teacher, Kyle spends a lot of time trying to encourage his students to succeed. His job can be rewarding, but often, it leaves him feeling emotionally drained. When students do well, it feels good to be so invested in his work; but when they aren’t thriving or learning material, he often takes it personally. Separating his work from his home life has gotten difficult as a result; Kyle struggles to sleep and often spends time compulsively grading assignments or planning lessons. Though he wants to take better care of himself, it’s hard to focus on his needs when his job seems to require all he can give.

Though he knows he could continue to debate his choices, Kyle feels as though he needs to actually address his mental health. That’s why he’s looking to talk with a psychiatrist, someone with the knowledge and guidance he needs to help manage what he’s worried could be OCD. By explaining what he’s experiencing to a psychiatrist, Kyle hopes that he’ll find relief through psychiatric care.

Like Kyle, you may also be looking to connect with a psychiatrist to address your mental health concerns. At Thriveworks in Joliet, IL our psychiatric team is ready to help you. They’re available completely virtual, so you can get personalized mental health care from home, the office, or on the go. Discover how psychiatric services can benefit you. Uninsured residents can access Thriveworks’ mental health services here, while residents with insurance can schedule an appointment here (where any out-of-pocket expenses will be covered).

Will Talking to a Psychiatrist Help?

Anyone can benefit from talking with a psychiatrist about the issues that they’re struggling to cope with. Just like talking with a physician about your body’s health, psychiatrists are able to help you better manage your mental health—which is just as important. If you’re not familiar with what a psychiatrist is, they:

  • Are medical doctors, in addition to often being licensed mental health professionals
  • Can prescribe helpful medication that assists clients in managing the harmful symptoms of mental health conditions
  • Are often the preferred treatment method for emotional or behavioral conditions such as major depression or ADHD

Not everyone who talks with a psychiatrist will be prescribed medication, and your treatment options will depend on your own preferences and needs. By talking openly about what’s bothering you, you can help to provide your Thriveworks psychiatrist with the information they need to help you manage your mental health challenges.

You may consider our psychiatric services if you’re suffering from the symptoms of:

  • ADHD
  • PTSD
  • Eating disorders
  • OCD
  • Depression
  • Social anxiety
  • And many other mental health conditions

By scheduling an initial appointment to connect with one of our trained providers, you can start moving toward a renewed emotional balance and work to improve your coping skills through therapy or medication management options.

Why Choose Online Psychiatry?

I had 6 or 7 sessions with Nancy Fredricks. A lovely lady. However, I had to end my sessions with her. I started becasue I was going through a depression, which was not normal for me. I had never had councelling on my own before. I'd had marriage councelling, but never individual councelling. Nancy did not ask a lot of questions or offer much in the way of practical solutions. Also, Nancy spends a lot of time scratching her head. I'm not sure what her condition is, but it is very distracting to watch during a therapy session. I'm not saying that talking to Nancy didn't help me. But it was not offering enough of a value that I would continue on with it. I wish her a lot of success in the future.

Absolutely unbelievable..I would never on my life have thought that the therapist needs a therapist for her own issues with dealing with people and client feedback. I'm very disappointed with nancy Frederick. She is no where qualified to act as a financial advisor or medical doctor and give unprofessional and non solicited advice.
