What is your go-to approach for child therapy?

Sophie Greger
Sophie Greger

Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)

My go-to approach in working with kids is to make them feel safe and give them a private space to work through feelings. I am upfront with the families about this and make sure they know that updates/sharing will be with the approval of the child to maintain trust. I love play therapy and creative arts therapy because it allows us to have fun while dealing with heavier issues.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement family therapy?

Sophie Greger
Sophie Greger

Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)

Clients can continue practicing interpersonal conflict resolution and communication skills.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in anxiety therapy?

Christine McGowan
Christine McGowan

Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)

I know a client is making meaningful progress in anxiety therapy when they can share positive experiences, like that they have been able to manage while utilizing the skills they have learned in sessions. Hearing that a client was able to tolerate being somewhere or doing something that was really hard or unmanageable for them to do before is when I know they are finding their balance and growing through these experiences.

What should someone do to prepare for starting depression counseling?

Raphael Alfaro
Raphael Alfaro

Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)

To prepare for counseling for depression I would recommend that you have a list of questions that you have about depression or better yet goals you would like to accomplish. I mention goals because a lot of times when we suffer from depression we tend to feel overwhelmed or feel as though we will never able to achieve them. I find that by having a small goal we can work together to get there and after each new goal we are starting to notice that the stones or burdens we are carrying on our backs, slowly start to fall off and we can begin to breath again.

What is your go-to approach for grief & loss counseling?

Sophie Greger
Sophie Greger

Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)

My go-to approach for helping people in grief & loss counseling is to validate the feelings they are having, even if those are conflicting. Grief is a complicated emotion that never presents the same way. I think clients benefit from being able to express the full range of feelings they may be experiencing in grief without judgment.

What tools do you teach in cognitive behavioral therapy?

Sophie Greger
Sophie Greger

Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)

I use a lot of psychoeducation on the concept of CBT, and then we use thought records, journaling, mindfulness, and radical acceptance to name a few of the tools.

Ed is a wonderful therapist. He poses unique questions that I really have to think about the answers and I like that I get to be challenged in my thought process. I am a Christian and It’s nice to have a fellow believer, understand scripture or share it with me to encourage me to keep moving forward in my journey? It’s almost like chatting with a friend Been my therapist for at least 18 months if not longer.

I finally found someone who understands me and challenges me intellectually. She explains to me why children do what they do in turn allowing me to understand why I am the way I am. She offers me real anxiety relief coping skills like breathing techniques or ice packs on the face. She doesn't just ask me how I feel all the time or make me talk about hard things if I'm not in the mood. She uses the words that I say to understand how I feel even if I don't know how I feel. I really like her and I really think she's going to help me.
