What is your go-to approach for individual therapy?

My go-to approach for helping people in individual therapy is a narrative therapy approach. I find the best benefit in narrative therapy because it provides a metaphorical framework through which to view mental health and life experiences.

My go-to approach for helping people in individual therapy is being genuine and authentic. I find the best benefit in bringing my own personality into sessions because it helps people to feel the most comfortable when starting out in therapy, which can be scary and uncomfortable.

What tools do you teach in individual therapy?

I teach the following tools in individual therapy:

  • Reframing: A tool to help challenge internal thoughts and think of things from new perspectives
  • Communication skills: Softened conversation start-ups to discuss heavy topics and ways to express foundational needs
  • Meditation skills: Deep breathing and mindfulness skills to help regulate somatic experiences of emotions
  • Neuroscience-informed CBT: Cognitive behavioral therapy tools through a neuroscience-informed lens using the structures of the brain to explain thought processes and patterns
  • Journaling: Therapeutic journaling techniques and journaling prompts as desired

I teach the following tools in individual therapy:

  • Square breathing - Breathing in a specific way to neutralize panic, worry, anxiety, and fear so that one can function at their optimal level.
  • Mindfulness - Being present in the moment by immersing oneself in the experience through the 5 senses.
  • Meditation - Taking time to intentionally experience peace within the body and mind.
  • Communication - Communicating needs, wants, and desires within relationships.
  • Assertiveness - Standing up for one's rights while respecting the rights of others.
  • Basic human rights - Rights that are common to all human beings.
  • Boundaries - What one is and is not comfortable with in any given situation.
  • Relationship red/green flags - Behaviors within relationships that are not healthy and that are healthy.
  • Self-care - Engaging in activities or behaviors that take care of the physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional needs of oneself.
  • Self-love - Engaging in loving kindness towards oneself because one is worthy of love.
  • Positive affirmations - Speaking kindly to oneself and acknowledging one's strengths and efforts.
  • Thought challenging/thought reappraisal - Taking a negative thought and putting it on trial to find evidence to support or deny the truth of the thought.
  • Gratitude - Recognizing that each day has something good, even if it is not a good day, to help overcome depression and negativity focus.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in individual therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in individual therapy when they come back and discuss how they were able to use tools outside of therapy to help regulate their emotions and navigate complex situations.

I know a client is making meaningful progress in individual therapy when a problem is faced outside of sessions and the client gives me the solution without me having to guide them or ask deeper questions.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement individual therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in individual therapy with books that we discuss throughout sessions and by engaging in journaling activities and utilizing the skills learned in therapy in their day-to-day life.

Clients can supplement their time in individual therapy by utilizing the tools learned in sessions, completing homework assignments when given, and reflecting outside of sessions on things that were discussed in sessions.

What should someone do to prepare for starting individual therapy?

To prepare for your first individual therapy session, you can develop a set of goals that you would like to work toward through therapy.

To prepare for your first individual therapy session, you can reflect on the things in your life that you feel are not working or that could be better, to help inform you and your therapist of your goals for therapy.

Starting Individual therapy

What is individual therapy?

Individual therapy, also known as individual-counseling, allows people to engage in private sessions with a skilled therapist, counselor, or psychologist. The core objective of individual therapy is to establish a secure and confidential setting where you can openly discuss whatever emotional, psychological, or behavioral challenges you face. Through these one-on-one sessions, the client and therapist work together to delve into, comprehend, and ultimately find solutions for the issues at hand in their life.

How does individual therapy work?

Individual therapy unfolds in a structured process, commencing with an initial assessment in which the therapist gathers essential information about your history, concerns, and objectives. Together, you and your therapist collaboratively establish specific, attainable goals for your sessions, which can encompass symptom alleviation, personal development, or finding solutions to particular challenges.

Can individual therapy help me?

Yes, individual therapy, also known as individual-counseling, at Thriveworks can help you to improve your mental health and overall quality of life.

Is individual therapy conducted in person or online?

Individual therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and via Online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does individual therapy last?

The duration of your individual therapy sessions will vary. The decision on the number and frequency of sessions is typically collaboratively determined by the client and therapist.

How much does individual therapy cost?

At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. Had bad fall last year and I was feeling sad, depressed and angry cuz now I couldn't go to see my auntie mom like I was doing two or three times a year.  Now I have to be home I broke my wrist in two places now I have doctors and doctors and doctors and x-rays and all this other stuff going on and I felt like I didn't have my life, didn't have a life right then and I know I would get better but it was taking too long so that was infecting me mentally and so I found the Thriveworks card at my pain doctors office and I gave him a call and immediately they set me up with an appointment.  I've had three or four appointments now.  I'm starting to feel better because I live by myself, I'm 71, and I needed someone to talk to so y'all set me up with a very nice lady.  I learned out to do Zoom and a couple meetings of course, but I'm feeling better  as time goes on.  I still have to have another surgery but at least I'm closer to being able to traveling again right now I can even walk a half a block so thank you Thriveworks for being there for me.  I don't know how ling I need you but I'm glad you're there.  My person is kind to start phone she allows me to talk, she gives me feedback, and I'm just so grateful to have had her during this holiday as well so I've also recommended a couple other people to try Thriveworks right at my doctor's office and they seem interested.  Thank you Thriveworks

I have known Mrs. Ashley Barber-Brown for 18 years now and I can honestly say that she is truly an amazing person. Besides her strong will to work hard and take care of her family, Ashley is also compassionate and undoubtedly dedicated to making sure that she helps others. Her selflessness, loyalty and authentic personality are just some of the many attributes that I admire about her.
