About Dorothy
Dory Ragon is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) with over 27 years of experience supporting a variety of clients in various settings. Dory is passionate about partnering with clients to assist them in reaching their personal, emotional, and professional goals. She specializes in providing support in addressing issues related to the female experience, anxiety, caregiver burnout (both professional and personal), depression, grief, loss, and life transitions. Dory has experience working with women, parents, children with emotional/behavioral challenges, and the bereaved. While working with these populations, she has provided support related to family issues, anxiety, loneliness, separation, coping difficulties, loss, and re-discovering one's life purpose. Due to recent changes in healthcare, Dory has focused her practice to include providing support to caregivers (both professional and personal) and women experiencing stress/anxiety related to the current political climate.
Dory completed her Master of Social Work (MSW) at the University of Central Florida. She utilizes an integrative approach, providing a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) framework to therapy, while incorporating client-centered, humanistic, and relational interventions. Dory's role in a therapeutic relationship is to walk alongside her clients, providing nonjudgmental support, information, and guidance to promote their success. She views each client as a unique individual, with a unique set of strengths and challenges. Dory tends to be solution-focused in her practice.
Together, you and Dory will develop a plan of care and establish some meaningful and attainable goals to improve your quality of life. Why did you decide to become a counselor?
I became a counselor because of one my very specific character traits which is curiosity. I have always been curious about the lives of others, their stories, their perspectives. I always want to know more about how other people view their world.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I work best with clients that are motivated to do the work in therapy. While I am there to guide, support and educate, it is the client doing the work. Any success my clients experience in therapy, is a direct result of the work they have done.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I am most excited to work with female clients experiencing burnout (fatigue) related to the demands of their everyday lives (at work, at home) and the anxiety/powerlessness that may be experienced because of the recent changes in the political environment. I am also thrilled to support clients through life changes. All change brings challenges, even the changes that we have chosen.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
I wish more clients knew that we are more in control of our thoughts than we believe ourselves to be. A lot of work can be done to influence mindset, thought patterns and self-esteem. One mantra that I use very often with clients is "There is nothing that will happen that I will not be able to handle". This is useful, because it is true. You have everything you need take care of yourself inside of you. You just need to learn how to access it.
What inspires you?
I feel inspired when I am able to see a client do things that they never thought would be possible. When they realize that the potential and self-confidence was always there. This usually occurs after a time of great difficulty and challenge, so it's great to see them on the other side of it!
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
The first session is a time to get to know each other and establish rapport. We need to determine if we are a good "fit". I will ask questions to get to know you and your needs (remember, I am curious about you!) but you will also get the opportunity to ask me questions.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
My goals for a first session are to be sure we are a good "fit", establish rapport, foster some comfort, establish goals for therapy and start working to develop an action plan.
