What is your go-to approach for online therapy?

My go-to approach for online therapy looks just like how in-person therapy would look — I will first actively listen to and connect with your story. We will then collaborate to create an individualized therapeutic approach that best matches your needs. I find the best benefit to most clients is a cognitive behavioral therapy approach, which we often will supplement with dialectical behavioral and/or solution-focused therapy techniques. The most important thing for you, the client, is to know that any therapy approach used will be tailored to best meet you where YOU are, throughout your journey.

What tools do you teach in online therapy?

I teach the following tools in online therapy:

  • Psychoeducation: When you discover your untapped ability to make changes about how you think, you will in turn change everything about your life!
  • Deep Breathing: Developing the practice of using your senses to directly communicate calmness and clarity to the mind grows your ability to navigate the world with more empowerment and less anxiety. Consistent use of breath practice also promotes a stronger sense of inner awareness to allow you to discover your own answers from within.
  • Mindfulness: Developing the practice of mindfulness is essential to halting the continued assault on your senses created by the world's 24/7 chaos. By developing the ability to better direct your thoughts, you will shut the door on all the noise when YOU choose. As a result, you will feel less overwhelmed by the presumed expectation that you must solve every challenge all at once. When you focus on “this moment,” you experience lowered anxiety, more inner peace, and more creativity to approach a challenge.
  • Thought reframing: Sometimes we just need to be able to shift our focus a few degrees to see things entirely differently than the assumptions or negative views that keep us trapped and unable to see there are always more possibilities!
  • Grounding: Keeping your feet “on the ground” is essential to allow for clear thinking and is an invaluable tool for calming severe anxiety or panic attacks.
  • Therapeutic workbooks: Verbalizing your thoughts in writing rather than visualizing only in your mind provides deeper processing of new thinking and better integration of learned skills.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy when he/she begins to authentically verbalize an understanding of needed changes followed by consistent implementation of learned skills into daily life. When this happens, lowered anxiety and a more positive mood soon follow.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement online therapy?

Clients can supplement online therapy time by consistently implementing techniques covered in sessions. The most significant change happens in the individual work done between sessions, not in the sessions themselves.

What should someone do to prepare for starting online therapy?

To prepare for your first online therapy session, I encourage you to be ready to answer the following questions:

  • What do you want to change, accomplish, or make better in therapy?
  • What would life be like if your symptoms were significantly improved?
  • What are you prepared to bring to the therapy process in order to accomplish the change you are seeking?

Starting Online therapy

What is online therapy?

With Thriveworks, Online therapy is an effective alternative to in-person therapy services in which a client can speak to a Thriveworks therapist remotely via online video conferencing. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person treatment, but they can also provide added benefits like reduced travel time, saving money on transportation or childcare, and increased access to care.

How does online therapy work?

Online therapy works much like traditional in-person therapy but takes place through secure video conferencing. Clients can attend Online therapy from any safe place they choose that has access to the internet, whether that be their home or another easily accessible place. Like in-person treatment, a therapist will work with their client to address their concerns, create goals, and establish an effective treatment plan.

What is the best option for online therapy?

There is no best option for online therapy—instead, it’s best to focus on finding a provider that meets your speicifc needs and with wom you can form a professional connection with.

Is online therapy just as effective?

Yes, online therapy is just as effetive for many clients as in-person sessions.

How long does online therapy last?

Online therapy can last for a few months to years depending on the goals and symptoms of the client. The treatment process will be unique to each client and lend itself to their specific concerns, which means that the time it takes to treat them will always be different. Timing is also up to the client themselves; they are free to stop therapy whenever they please, especially if they feel they have reached their goals and addressed their concerns.

How much does online therapy cost?

Our Thriveworks therapists at Thriveworks in Raleigh, NC accept most major forms of insurance, which means that many of our clients only pay $0-$50 co-pay per session. However, there are also self-pay options that sit around $200 per session, depending on the service and location, for those who are out-of-network.

Need more help deciding?

Online counseling offers a convenient alternative to in-person therapy. Instead of meeting with your therapist at their office, you get to work with your therapist from wherever you choose: from the comfort of your own home, from your car if you need to, or from a local coffee shop if you so desire. Just make sure you have internet access or phone service because you’ll connect with your therapist in one of three ways:

  • Over the phone
  • Via videoconference sessions
  • Email/text messaging

All of the above options can prove effective; it’s all about choosing the option that best suits you. For example, if you want to work with your therapist for a set, consecutive 60 or so minutes (as you would in in-person counseling), you’d choose one of the first two options. However, if you’re interested in a more casual correspondence, email/text messaging might be the right online therapy option for you.

If you’re intrigued by the idea of online counseling, reach out to Thriveworks Counseling in Raleigh, NC. We can set you up with an online therapist as soon as today, or talk to you more about our services. Either way, just call (919) 424-6045. And keep reading to find out more about online therapy benefits.

5 Reasons to Try Online Counseling

If you’re debating whether online therapy is right for you, consider the following reasons to try online counseling:

  1. It’s convenient and comfortable: Regardless of where you live—in the country, the city, or the suburbs—it’s very likely that you spend more time getting to and from your appointment than you do in the actual appointment itself. Online therapy addresses this problem by allowing you to save time and work with your therapist from home. This means optimal convenience and comfort, too.
  2. It’s tested and true: Did you know that online therapy counseling is not a new service? It’s actually been around as early as the 1950s with a mental health hotline. Then, in the 1980s, the first online self-help group was created. Now today, you can enjoy a variety of online counseling services including self-help groups, mental health discussion boards, and one-on-one time with a licensed therapist.
  3. It’s affordable: Also, an important note is that online counseling is an affordable therapy option, too. In fact, more and more insurance plans now cover online counseling. If yours doesn’t, though, that’s okay. Thriveworks in Raleigh, NC has affordable self-pay options.
  4. It’s quick: With a traditional in-person therapy appointment, you might have to wait a few days or weeks for your first appointment. This is not the case when it comes to online counseling. Online counseling allows you to book a session right away, often even the same day!
  5. It’s easy: Even though we do our best to reassure clients that this is not a place to fear judgment, many clients struggle to open up and worry about what their therapist will think of them. Fortunately, they find that it’s possible for them to open up to a therapist online instead.

In a nutshell, online therapy is a convenient, comfortable, effective, and affordable option. On top of all that, you can schedule your appointment with ease—and potentially open up to your therapist more easily. If you’re interested in meeting with an online therapist at Thriveworks Counseling, let us know. We can get you all set up today.

Had bad fall last year and I was feeling sad, depressed and angry cuz now I couldn't go to see my auntie mom like I was doing two or three times a year.  Now I have to be home I broke my wrist in two places now I have doctors and doctors and doctors and x-rays and all this other stuff going on and I felt like I didn't have my life, didn't have a life right then and I know I would get better but it was taking too long so that was infecting me mentally and so I found the Thriveworks card at my pain doctors office and I gave him a call and immediately they set me up with an appointment.  I've had three or four appointments now.  I'm starting to feel better because I live by myself, I'm 71, and I needed someone to talk to so y'all set me up with a very nice lady.  I learned out to do Zoom and a couple meetings of course, but I'm feeling better  as time goes on.  I still have to have another surgery but at least I'm closer to being able to traveling again right now I can even walk a half a block so thank you Thriveworks for being there for me.  I don't know how ling I need you but I'm glad you're there.  My person is kind to start phone she allows me to talk, she gives me feedback, and I'm just so grateful to have had her during this holiday as well so I've also recommended a couple other people to try Thriveworks right at my doctor's office and they seem interested.  Thank you Thriveworks

Besides her strong will to work hard and take care of her family, Ashley is also compassionate and undoubtedly dedicated to making sure that she helps others. Her selflessness, loyalty and authentic personality are just some of the many attributes that I admire about her.
