Get to know Matthew
Why did you decide to become a counselor?
I knew from an early age that I love to empower people to reach their goals. My professional career began as an elementary school teacher. While teaching, I realized that I was drawn to help people with their issues that could not be left at the classroom door, and so I decided to pursue a career in counseling.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I enjoy working with clients of varied ages. I have successfully assisted clients to reach their goals as they faced a variety of issues, such as: relationship difficulties, depression, anxiety, PTSD, homelessness, divorce, academic difficulties, attention deficit, anger management, assault survival, and inmate transition back into society. I have also worked well with clients from disadvantaged backgrounds: low-income individuals, first-generation college students, and individuals with disabilities.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I am most excited to work with clients who are motivated to find solutions to their life puzzles. Additionally, I enjoy working with clients who are open to non-traditional and creative approaches to finding and reaching their solutions. Even if client motivation and creativity is not present at first, I enjoy helping clients build these important components of the therapeutic process.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
I would love for all clients to know that solutions do exist for their life puzzles. Counseling is a lot like getting the oil changed in our cars, or having our teeth cleaned by the dentist. Counseling is “mental hygiene”.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
A career with Thriveworks is a natural fit for my professional and personal lifestyle and needs. As a parent of a special needs child, I need to be readily available to provided additional care for my family. The flexible schedule and understanding staff at Thriveworks, allow me to have a cohesive work/personal life balance.
What inspires you?
Without a doubt, I am inspired by creativity! I love the expressive arts and find them to be very therapeutic. Whether it's photography, painting, drawing, etc., I find the arts to be extremely rewarding and inspiring.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
It is important that we make sure all the required paperwork work is taken care of. After we've made certain that the paperwork is in order, we'll have a discussion about your background, interests, strengths, supports, and goals for our meetings. We'll also start planning our session frequency.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
I hope for us to start building rapport and collaborating on identifying 1-3 starter goals for us to work on in our future sessions.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?
I am a positive and enthusiastic professional. I will not call you my "patient". The way I consider our professional relationship, is that you are my "client" and I work for you. I will not tell you what your goals are but we will discuss what your goals could be and you will be the one to identify what goal you want for us to focus on.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I love time together with my family (indoors and outdoors) and creating visual art.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
I have a unique, empathetic perspective.
