What is your go-to approach for online therapy?

Online therapy, in my opinion, requires the client to be more verbal. It also requires the client to be self directed. I prefer when a client is a true partner in their treatment.

What tools do you teach in online therapy?

I teach my clients how to build an emotional toolbox. In this box is a variety of techniques that we discuss each session. They include “homework” assignments, suggestions to work with their PCP, ways to improve communication skills, and ways to improve sleep hygiene. My background is in health psychology, so I take a holistic approach to mental health and wellness.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy?

When it comes to making progress, I rely on the client to be a self-reporting advocate for their mental health. I also tell my clients that managing emotions adaptively and maintaining one's emotional baseline are lofty and achievable goals. In their progress, I am their biggest cheerleader when the going gets tough so that they do not regress in treatment.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement online therapy?

I encourage my clients to build their support system, do outside readings, try new activities, and keep track of their own progress and concerns between sessions and bring that information to each session.

What should someone do to prepare for starting online therapy?

To prepare for the first session, I feel clients should be aware of the intake process. I tell clients at that first meeting that some of the questions may not pertain to them or may not seen as relevant, but they are needed not only for insurance, but to develop a treatment plan to fit their personal needs.

Starting Online therapy

What is online therapy?

With Thriveworks, Online therapy is an effective alternative to in-person therapy services in which a client can speak to a Thriveworks therapist remotely via online video conferencing. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person treatment, but they can also provide added benefits like reduced travel time, saving money on transportation or childcare, and increased access to care.

How does online therapy work?

Online therapy works much like traditional in-person therapy but takes place through secure video conferencing. Clients can attend Online therapy from any safe place they choose that has access to the internet, whether that be their home or another easily accessible place. Like in-person treatment, a therapist will work with their client to address their concerns, create goals, and establish an effective treatment plan.

What is the best option for online therapy?

There is no best option for online therapy—instead, it’s best to focus on finding a provider that meets your specific needs and with whom you can form a professional connection with.

Is online therapy just as effective?

Yes, online therapy is just as effetive for many clients as in-person sessions.

How long does online therapy last?

Online therapy can last for a few months to years depending on the goals and symptoms of the client. The treatment process will be unique to each client and lend itself to their specific concerns, which means that the time it takes to treat them will always be different. Timing is also up to the client themselves; they are free to stop therapy whenever they please, especially if they feel they have reached their goals and addressed their concerns.

How much does online therapy cost?

Our Thriveworks therapists at Thriveworks in Grand Rapids Charter Township, MI accept most major forms of insurance, which means that many of our clients only pay $0-$50 co-pay per session. However, there are also self-pay options that sit around $200 per session, depending on the service and location, for those who are out-of-network.

I am loving Thriveworks not only for the convenience of virtual appointments, but this is the first place I’ve tried that has actually helped. My therapist is incredibly kind and helpful and is amazing at helping me with any issues I’m struggling with. They paired me with a therapist that is experienced in the specific areas I needed help with, and it has been wonderful. I would absolutely recommend Thriveworks!

I was in need of a psychiatrist for chronic depression and anxiety. I came across thrive having only a 4 month wait instead 9 to 12 month wait with any other psychiatrist. This was wonderful news. I met Denise as my clinician. She is very empathetic very knowledgeable. She has helped me alot sine my first vist. She is very dedicated to her patients which I truly appreciate. I would highly recommend her for any psychiatric needs. I think she goes above and beyond her role. She is a caring individual. There should be more people like Denise. She needs to be recognized for her work.
