Amanda is such an incredible mental health provider! I look forward to our weekly or bi-weekly sessions (depending on my schedule, she's always accommodating if I need to switch things up). She's my sounding board, and in the 18+ months I've been seeing her, she's helped me navigate through many of my long term struggles as well as the short term crises with patience and compassion.

Get to know Amanda

Why did you decide to become a counselor?

I am so very much a helper, it is in my bones! I am very empathetic and I love to help people heal and to feel seen. This led to a helping profession, and it fits very well with my nature. I think mental health is such an important part of who we are as people, and that keeping that part of us healthy is just as important as any other kind of healthcare.

What types of clients do you work with best?

I love all types of clients! I primarily work with adults, and have seen clients through all walks and stages of life. I spent a good portion of my career prior to Thriveworks working with young adults, so I have a lot of experience with that population, but have branched out during my career to adults of any age. Specialties of mine include anxiety disorders, ADHD, LGBTQIA issues, self esteem and depression.

What type of clients are you most excited to work with?

As someone diagnosed with ADHD in adulthood, I get excited about working with other adults with ADHD, as we’ve been through similar journeys! I also love working with couples, as I feel like I am a good mediator and enjoy creating understanding between people.

Ultimately, though, I enjoy working with anyone who is motivated and eager to learn and grow, and it’s very rewarding for me when I can help clients gain a greater understanding of their issues and to grow.

What’s one thing you wish all clients knew?

That needing help does not make you weak, flawed, or broken. I think many people have the bias that being in therapy is some kind of failure, or that it makes them one. That is absolutely not true, and admitting that you need help is one of the strongest steps you can take.

Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?

I started at Thriveworks in 2021,when COVID 19 was very much still a large part of our lives. Thriveworks empowered me to be able to provide counseling through telehealth, which worked perfectly for clients and myself during this time. Working from home has continued to be wonderful for my life, as I am a bit of a homebody, myself, as well as for those who would rather have care without leaving their home. I think it's a great benefit for clients vs having to go into an office. My pets also appreciate me being home with them all day.

What inspires you?

I am inspired by kindness and creativity. I love seeing humans expressing both of these things, and I think they're some of the best qualities we can have. I love the Mr. Rogers quote where he says than when there are scary things happening in the world, "look for the helpers". There are always people trying to help. Us loving and encouraging each other. That inspires me.

What can clients expect in their first session with you?

Know that an intake involves a lot of questions to gather background information so I can get to know you and your history. We will, of course, dive much deeper into more specific issues in future sessions, but hit on a lot of different subjects more quickly and generally in the first session.

You are also welcome to ask me any questions you may have! We will also make a plan for what goals you would like to accomplish, and discuss scheduling.

What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?

In our first session I want to accomplish you feeling heard, and welcomed. I'd like to hear your story, what brought you to therapy, and what you're hoping to get out of your therapy sessions.

What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?

I like to believe I am very down to earth and open. I don't want you to view me as an "authority figure" in any way, only a helper. We are in this together. I am also very open to different perspectives, people, and backgrounds, even if they are different from my own.

I believe that you are the expert of your own life. I am here to guide you gently toward your goals, but you really are the architect of how that happens. Know I am always open to feedback, or your input on if you'd like to focus on a different topic, go in a different direction, etc.

I also am proudly an LGBTQIA+ affirming therapist.

What do you do for fun/on your time off?

I am an avid crafter! I'm always jumping from one craft to another, whether it's knitting, jewelry making, or some other such hobby. I have an Etsy store where I sell jewelry. I also love animals, and have two dogs, a cat, a bunny, and a few crested geckos.

I also a big nerd! I love sci-fi & fantasy, my favorite TV show ever is Doctor Who. I also play video games from time to time when I'm not crafting.

What’s one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?

Oh gosh, who can choose only one!

I would have to say kindness. I believe so much in showing kindness and respect to everyone I meet. I think we are all just human, whatever station you hold, nobody is greater or lesser than anyone else, and we all deserve respect. We are just humans, having a shared human experience. Yet we are all so unique as well! I love that.
