Therapy for Personality Disorders
Counseling for personality orders generally begins by getting the client’s feelings under control. There are a number of ways to accomplish this goal, including medication and talk therapy. Your counselor will discuss your options with you and together you’ll create a treatment plan.
There have been major changes to personality disorder counseling
Just a few decades ago there was virtually no help available for people with personality disorders. Today as many as 30% of people who seek help for mental health related issues are diagnosed with and treated for personality disorders.
Diagnosing your personality disorder
There are dozens and dozens of types of specific personality disorders. Most fall into one of three categories, which are called clusters, but these clusters don’t cover every single option out there. Your counselor will do a detailed analysis if your symptoms and history to make the right diagnosis.
Learning to let go of the past
One of the main issues that many people with personality disorder deal with is their core beliefs. Essentially, these are beliefs that are totally inflexible and that are held about people in the client’s life, the world around them, or the client themselves.
These core beliefs develop over a period of time and even when there’s plenty of evidence that they are not valid, a person with a personality disorder can’t see it. A personality disorder counselor can help get to the bottom of them, find out where they originate, and provide clients with assistance moving past them.
