Starting Marriage counseling

What is Marriage counseling?

Marriage counseling, also known as couples therapy and relationship counseling, helps couples work through their specific relationship issues. Thriveworks marriage counseling in Grand Rapids Charter Township, MI is led by licensed professionals — often licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) — who are experts in their field and best-equipped to help couples. Some examples of common focuses within Marriage counseling include:

  • Jealousy
  • Trust issues
  • Infidelity
  • Opposing values
  • Different visions for the future
  • Disagreements in parenting
  • Lack of trust
  • Financial distress
  • Sex issues

How does Marriage counseling work?

Marriage counseling works by helping couples identify and better navigate their unique challenges. Following an initial assessment of the couple in terms of strengths and needs, the therapist would then discuss their therapeutic goals and any possible approaches or ways of working together as therapist and couple.
Couples attend sessions together, whether they meet in person or by video. In addition to regular marriage counseling sessions, each partner may also be asked to attend a few individual sessions to supplement their progress. This will allow their counselor to get to know each individual better, assess each of their personal needs, and develop the very best treatment plan moving forward.

Is Marriage counseling conducted in person or online?

Marriage counseling at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you and your partner.

How long does Marriage counseling last?

On average, couples attend marriage counseling for 12 weeks. However, marriage counseling may last longer or shorter, dependent on the couples' needs, the challenges they'd like to work through, and the pace of their progress. Marriage counselors and therapists at Thriveworks in Grand Rapids Charter Township, MI work with their clients to create goals, decide on ideal timelines, and establish treatment plans.

Need more help deciding?

Do you and your spouse spend a lot of time arguing? Does each passing year mark a furtherance from one another or a deepening connection? Do you feel more like you’re playing on either side of the tennis net instead of on the same side, working together?

Marriage can either be an incredibly nourishing aspect of your life, or it can tear you apart. Or worse — it can make you feel completely numb. You should expect your relationship to move you forward in life, not pull you back from what you really want. If you feel like your relationship is more curse than blessing, then it’s time we sit down for a talk and see what can be done.

Perhaps you don’t have any major issues with your spouse, but want an even deeper connection. In either case (the “better” or the “worse”), Thriveworks Grand Rapids Marriage Counseling is here to help.

Not next year, not next month, not in a few weeks — NOW. What are you waiting for? It’s only your life that we’re talking about, and it’s passing by with each moment.

Your marriage can thrive. We can help make sure that it does. It’s what we’re here for.

Put Your Marriage on the Right Track

How do did you spouse go from being your soulmate to becoming your archnemesis? It’s a fair question, and deserves immediate attention.

During all the exciting first dates, hand holding, laughing, affectionate moments and perhaps even into raising children, it’s easy to lose sight of why you got on this crazy ride in the first place. If it wasn’t to make each others’ lives better and if you’re not continually working on making each others’ lives better, then there’s a problem.

That problem, more often than not, is that two seemingly well-intentioned people signed a “Till death to us part” contract before even understanding what kind of commitment that really is, much less even the kind of open communication that requires.

No, we can’t set back the clocks and start over again, but what we can do is take some time to acknowledge where things are right now — in the full and brutal objectivity of true honesty — and figure out where to go from here. There are many causes that could bring a couple to the point where they don’t want to spend another second with one another, let alone the better part of their lives, when there is so much pain and hurt. We will talk about the causality, sure. It’s important. But what’s even more important is what do we do know with the information and experiences we now have.

With a Thriveworks Grand Rapids, Forest Hills Marriage Counselor, you and your spouse will discuss:

  • Quality time
  • Boundaries
  • Harmful communication patterns and how to fix them
  • How to REALLY communicate
  • Honesty, honesty, honesty
  • Developing mutual respect
  • Intimacy and commitment issues
  • Mutual understanding and acceptance
  • Active listening techniques
  • Anger management
  • Forgiveness
  • And much, much more

You Found the Right Place

Our counselors and coaches are leaders in the field. At Thriveworks Grand Rapids, Forest Hills Marriage Counseling, we are part of an ever-growing, national network of mental health practitioners who aim to provide the best therapy service possible. As such, many of our clinicians are featured in trusted media outlets such as Prevention, CNN, Counseling Today, The Boston Globe and more.

We have worked with couples of all kinds: those just getting started on their path and others who have been married for decades. Couples that are still drooling over each other on a daily basis, and others that want to buy a plane ticket and some hair dye.

Really, we’ve seen it all. There’s no scenario you can present to us that you should feel the need to be embarrassed about. Furthermore, our depth of experience in working with other couples means that we have the knowledge that it takes to know what works and what doesn’t, depending on what you’re going through, where you’ve been and who you both are as individuals. Our sessions will be tailored to your needs, and won’t follow a simplistic guidebook.

We’re also available to meet with you tomorrow. We don’t believe in waiting lines, we believe in counseling. We want you to be able to start moving on a better path as soon as possible, and what better time than the present moment. (It’s all we really have, anyway — the past and future are but memories and projections.)

Let’s do this thing. Whether things are fairly happy or fairly heated, we are here to help. Your marriage should bring your fulfillment and joy. Call us at 616-425-2176 or click the button below. Let us help you find the way to a fulfilling, deepening relationship with the love of your life.

I am loving Thriveworks not only for the convenience of virtual appointments, but this is the first place I’ve tried that has actually helped. My therapist is incredibly kind and helpful and is amazing at helping me with any issues I’m struggling with. They paired me with a therapist that is experienced in the specific areas I needed help with, and it has been wonderful. I would absolutely recommend Thriveworks!

I was in need of a psychiatrist for chronic depression and anxiety. I came across thrive having only a 4 month wait instead 9 to 12 month wait with any other psychiatrist. This was wonderful news. I met Denise as my clinician. She is very empathetic very knowledgeable. She has helped me alot sine my first vist. She is very dedicated to her patients which I truly appreciate. I would highly recommend her for any psychiatric needs. I think she goes above and beyond her role. She is a caring individual. There should be more people like Denise. She needs to be recognized for her work.
