About
I believe healing happens when you feel genuinely heard, respected, and supported as a whole person, not just a diagnosis.
I am a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) with 15 years of experience providing compassionate, evidence-based psychiatric care. I work with children ages 10 and older, adolescents, and adults experiencing anxiety, depression, PTSD, mood disorders, trauma, and psychotic disorders. Many of the clients I support feel overwhelmed, misunderstood, or stuck and are seeking clarity, stability, and relief.
I earned my master’s degree in nursing from the University of South Alabama. My approach is collaborative, individualized, and compassionate, with a focus on understanding each client’s full experience, strengths, and goals. I provide thoughtful evaluations, clear education, and treatment planning that may include medication management and supportive care.
Seeking mental health care can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to navigate it alone. I strive to meet clients with respect, understanding, and support while helping them improve emotional well-being and daily functioning. I would be honored to support you as you take the next step toward healing and growth when you feel ready.

As a therapist with a disability, I know firsthand what it feels like to move through a world that isn’t adapted to you. Healing begins when we change how we meet our challenges by learning to work with every part of who we are instead of resisting it. It’s our strengths and vulnerabilities together that make us who we are.
At the start of our work together, collaboration is at the core. You are the expert on your own life. My role is to support you with clinical training and therapeutic tools while honoring your lived experience and the strengths you already carry.
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Treatment Victim Advocate. I am also a wheelchair user and have professional and lived experience working alongside LGBTQ+ communities. These perspectives shape my commitment to accessible and affirming care that recognizes both personal experience and the systems that influence our lives.
My approach to therapy is integrative and flexible. I draw from motivational interviewing, trauma-informed care, and skills-based practices such as DBT and CBT when helpful. Our work is shaped around what feels most supportive for you. Sessions can be structured and goal-focused, or more open and reflective, depending on your needs and priorities.
I have extensive experience working with people impacted by harmful or high-conflict relationships, including intimate partner and family dynamics. I also work with people living with disabilities and members of the LGBTQ+ community. This space supports healing from trauma, grief and loss, relationship challenges, identity shifts, and major life transitions. There is no pressure to define your experiences in any one way.
Outside of the therapy room, a bit more about me: I’m a dumpling enthusiast, an open-world fantasy game explorer, and an avid reader who adds five new books to my TBR list for every one I finish.
If this feels like a good fit, I would be honored to roll alongside you.

My go-to approach for helping people in grief & loss counseling is person-centered therapy. I prefer this approach because it emphasizes empathy, unconditional positive regard, and genuine understanding. In person-centered therapy, I strive to create a safe and supportive environment where individuals can express their feelings openly without fear of judgment. I actively listen to their experiences, validate their emotions, and help them explore their thoughts and feelings surrounding the loss. Additionally, I utilize various techniques such as reflective listening, paraphrasing, and open-ended questions to facilitate self-exploration and promote healing. By empowering individuals to make their own discoveries and insights, person-centered therapy fosters a sense of autonomy and self-compassion, which are crucial components of the grieving process. Overall, I find that person-centered therapy provides a compassionate and effective framework for supporting individuals as they navigate the complex emotions of grief and loss.
I teach the following tools in grief & loss counseling: Mindfulness techniques: I guide individuals through mindfulness exercises to help them become more present and aware of their thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations. Mindfulness can provide a sense of calm and grounding amidst the turbulence of grief. Coping skills development: I help individuals identify and develop healthy coping strategies to manage the challenges of grief, such as seeking social support, engaging in self-care activities, setting boundaries, and practicing self-compassion. Cognitive restructuring: I assist individuals in challenging and reframing unhelpful thoughts and beliefs related to their loss, such as feelings of guilt, blame, or self-criticism. This process promotes adaptive coping and facilitates emotional healing. Creative expression: Encouraging creative outlets such as art, writing, music, or movement can provide individuals with alternative ways to express and process their grief when words alone may feel insufficient. Support network exploration: I assist individuals in identifying and utilizing their existing support networks, as well as exploring additional sources of support such as support groups, therapy groups, or online communities.
I know a client is making meaningful progress in grief & loss counseling when: They show increased emotional awareness and regulation: Clients may become more adept at identifying and expressing their emotions in a healthy and constructive manner. They exhibit greater acceptance and adaptation to the loss: Clients may gradually integrate the reality of their loss into their lives and begin to adjust to a new sense of normalcy. They may show signs of acceptance, resilience, and flexibility in navigating life without their loved one. They experience a reduction in distressing symptoms: Clients may report decreased intensity and frequency of symptoms associated with grief, such as intrusive thoughts, rumination, anxiety, depression, or physical symptoms. They may also demonstrate improvements in sleep, appetite, energy levels, and overall functioning. They engage in meaningful activities and connections: Clients may start to re-engage in activities they enjoy, pursue personal goals, and invest in relationships with others. They demonstrate increased insight and growth: Clients may gain new perspectives on their grief experience, develop a deeper understanding of themselves and their needs, and experience personal growth and transformation as a result of their journey through grief. They may also express a renewed sense of hope, meaning, and connection to life.
Clients can supplement their time in grief & loss counseling with various activities and practices to support their healing and growth: Self-reflection through journaling, meditation, or simply quiet contemplation. Self-care: through exercise, healthy eating, adequate rest, relaxation techniques, spending time in nature, or indulging in hobbies and interests that bring them joy and comfort. Seeking support through trusted friends, family members, or support groups for additional support outside of counseling sessions. Sharing their thoughts and feelings with others who understand and empathize can provide validation, comfort, and a sense of connection during difficult times. Educating themselves: Learning about grief and the grieving process can help clients gain a deeper understanding of their experiences and normalize their feelings. They can read books, articles, or online resources on grief and loss, attend workshops or seminars, or listen to podcasts or lectures by grief experts. Engaging in memorialization: Creating meaningful rituals or activities to honor their loved one's memory can provide clients with a sense of connection and continuity. This may involve creating a memorial collage, writing letters or poems, visiting their loved one's resting place, or participating in community events or fundraisers in their honor.
To prepare for their first grief & loss counseling session, an individual can: Reflect on their grief journey: Take some time to reflect on their thoughts, feelings, and experiences related to their loss. Consider what has been most challenging, what coping strategies have been helpful, and what they hope to gain from counseling. Clarify their goals and expectations: Think about what they hope to achieve through grief counseling and what specific goals they would like to work towards. This could include processing emotions, finding coping strategies, gaining insight, or exploring ways to honor their loved one's memory. Gather relevant information: Bring any relevant information or documents to the first session, such as medical records, death certificates, or information about the circumstances surrounding the loss. This can help the counselor better understand the individual's situation and provide more personalized support. Be open and honest: Approach the counseling process with openness and honesty, and be willing to share their thoughts, feelings, and experiences openly with the counselor. Building a trusting and supportive relationship is essential for effective grief counseling. Manage expectations: Understand that grief is a complex and individual process that takes time, and that counseling is not a quick fix. It's important to be patient and compassionate with themselves as they navigate their grief journey, and to recognize that healing takes time and effort. By taking these steps to prepare for their first grief & loss counseling session, individuals can set a solid foundation for their therapeutic journey and maximize the benefits of counseling.

Grief and loss counseling isn’t one-size-fits-all, but it involves sharing about your loss and then working with your counselor to acknowledge and accept your new reality in its wake. Your provider at Thriveworks in Colorado Springs, CO will design your treatment plan around your unique needs and goals for therapy, applying the counseling techniques that best support them.
If you have recently experienced an event like the death of a loved one, a breakup or divorce, the loss of a job, or another major life change, then you may want to seek grief and loss counseling. Grief can be caused by many experiences and events, so if you feel that you are having trouble moving on from a certain event or find that it is still impacting your life and functioning, grief and loss counseling can help you process it more effectively so that you can move on and once again find fulfillment and satisfaction in your life.
There are many counseling theories for treating grief, one of the most frequently used being the dual process model of grief which helps people acknowledge who or what they’ve lost through rumination while also adjusting to the new roles and identities that this loss has now placed on them. There are also many commonly used therapy approaches used in grief and loss counseling, including Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and traumatic grief therapy.
Grief & loss counseling at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.
For many, grief and loss counseling lasts for about 6 months. For others, it may last shorter or longer, depending on the severity of their loss and their grief.
Since you are searching for help, it most likely means that you or someone you know is dealing with the loss of a loved one, loss of a job, relationship, health or even the loss of a dream you once had. It is difficult to process a loss, especially when it’s someone you love. We would like to offer condolences for your loss. Grief is one of the most painful and strong emotions, always difficult to process, especially doing it alone.
Grief counseling, also known as bereavement counseling, helps a person or family deal with loss. Whether the loss is a spouse, child, sibling, grandmother or family pet, Colorado Springs Thriveworks counselors are experienced and willing to process the loss with you. Sometimes, a loss may not be a death. It could be the loss of health or physical function, loss of a dream or a loss of a home. Whatever the loss, the professional counselors at Thriveworks will help you to understand your emotions and make you way through the stages of grief in a healthy and positive way. Moving through these stages is a unique process for everyone; moving at different speeds and intensities. Each stage in grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance, will be discovered at each person’s own pace.
People working through grief will sometimes get stuck in a stage, before acceptance. For example, if a person is stuck in the denial stage, they may not accept that the person or loss is really gone. Avoiding the reality of a loss is one way to become stuck, unable to move toward acceptance. A person that is stuck in the stage of anger, may drive others they love away, creating more loss.
The grief counselors at Thriveworks Colorado Springs are leaders in their field, professional and equipped to work with all types of loss. When you or someone you care for are ready for help, we are ready too. Making the first call is difficult, so we want to be responsive and available when you are ready.
