What is your go-to approach for individual therapy?

Erin: I work from a cognitive behavioral approach to help individuals assess the evidence for their thoughts and explore how these thoughts impact the way they feel. I also utilize mindfulness techniques to help clients learn to identify what they are thinking, feeling, and experiencing in the here and now to enhance awareness and emotional regulation. Finally, I utilize behavioral activation techniques to help clients break down their goals into manageable steps and create reward patterns to reinforce progress made over time.

Jami: My go-to approach for helping people in individual therapy is assisting them in developing deeper insight into themselves: who they are, why they are the way they are, and what makes them “tick.” We then take that new insight and build upon it with actionable goals and changes toward their more fulfilled, desired life!

What tools do you teach in individual therapy?

Erin: In therapy, I teach about the following:

  • Identifying distorted thinking patterns
  • The stages of change: pre-contemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance
  • Reframing interpretations
  • Challenging inaccurate core beliefs
  • Mindfulness techniques
  • Emotional regulation techniques
  • Thinking through the consequences
  • Practicing gratitude
  • Reflecting on progress made
  • Setting boundaries
  • Growth vs. fixed mindsets
  • Noticing and accepting
  • Exposure and desensitizing

Jami: I teach the following tools in individual therapy:

  • Emotional intelligence: How to recognize, identify, and truly feel your feelings. This can include learning new vocabulary, learning mindfulness, learning healthy ways to cope with emotions, etc.
  • Self-reflection: Gaining skills to be able to sit back, think, and identify the root or purpose behind your actions, feelings, or thoughts, then use them as fuel for change and self-understanding rather than beating ourselves down or shoving our feelings down where they will later explode in other ways.
  • Communication: Learning how to use effective, healthy communication, which also includes healthy confrontation. This can be within the workplace, with a spouse or partner, or in parenting your children.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in individual therapy?

Erin: I know a client is making meaningful progress in a number of ways. One, I can tell by how they are talking about their experiences. Clients begin naturally reframing and improving the accuracy of their interpretations. Two, meaningful progress is made when clients report that they are feeling better overall for a consistent period of time. Three, meaningful progress is made when they are following through on intentional changes that produce real improvements to their quality of life.

Jami: I know a client is making meaningful progress in individual therapy when they come to sessions with new insight they gained independently or leave sessions with new insight from our talk. Meaningful progress can also be the successful use of new tools/coping skills or reporting feeling happier, more content, or more confident.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement individual therapy?

Erin: Clients can supplement their time in individual therapy by exploring additional resources that support their therapeutic agenda such as reading books and listening to podcasts. It is also helpful when clients journal to track what they are experiencing day to day in order to provide accurate information on the experiences they are having and any changes that may take place between sessions.

Jami: Clients can supplement their time in individual therapy by taking notes in sessions and reviewing them between visits to keep info and goals fresh, practicing new skills learned in sessions between visits, and journaling. There are also a lot of great mental health podcasts and self-help books from experts in the field that can be a great addition to therapy!

What should someone do to prepare for starting individual therapy?

Erin: To prepare for your first individual therapy session, you can think about what you would like to work toward in your sessions and what you are hoping to get out of the experience. Most importantly though, therapy welcomes you as you are!

Jami: To prepare for your first individual therapy session, you can take some time to ground yourself, reflect on why you're going and what you want to accomplish, find a calm/quiet/private space to hold your session if virtual, and take a deep breath. It may feel hard or scary at first, but investing in yourself is the best decision you can make!

Starting Individual therapy

What is individual therapy?

Individual therapy, also known as individual-counseling, allows people to engage in private sessions with a skilled therapist, counselor, or psychologist. The core objective of individual therapy is to establish a secure and confidential setting where they can openly discuss whatever emotional, psychological, or behavioral challenges you face. Through these one-on-one sessions, the client and therapist work together to delve into, comprehend, and ultimately find solutions for the issues at hand in their life.

How does individual therapy work?

Individual therapy unfolds in a structured process, commencing with an initial assessment in which the therapist gathers essential information about your history, concerns, and objectives. Together, you and your therapist collaboratively establish specific, attainable goals for your sessions, which can encompass symptom alleviation, personal development, or finding solutions to particular challenges.

Can individual therapy help me?

Yes, individual therapy, also known as individual-counseling, at Thriveworks can help you to improve your mental health and overall quality of life.

Is individual therapy conducted in person or online?

Individual therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and via Online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does individual therapy last?

The duration of your individual therapy sessions will vary. The decision on the number and frequency of sessions is typically collaboratively determined by the client and therapist.

Kenneth Fulton has been my psychologist for over a year and a half. He has brought meaning back to my life, after losing my mother in February 2020 and dealing with covid. I can never put into words what his counseling has done for me. I went from a very dark place back into the light again. He's the greatest at what he does. I could go on and on about this counselor but that would take too long. Thank you Ken for everything you've done.

Through my sessions with Lora I’ve been able to stop doubting myself and my capabilities. My life has changed drastically for the better through her teachings and spot-on feedback. I started seeing Lora because I was going through a tough breakup and not only were we able to acknowledge the toxicity of that relationship, we were also able to tackle my productivity issues at work and I have since completely turned my career around. I feel as though I’ve been running with a ton of weight on my shoulders and Lora was able to guide me on how to liberate myself from all of these burdens and run freely! Thank you Lora, don’t know where I’d be without ya!

I worked with Christiana for nearly four years in a clinical setting. In our agency, she was known as a compassionate counselor and was very sought-after by clients because of her caring nature and ability to hold clients accountable when needed. Her solid clinical skills made her a colleague I could always count on for solid feedback and a very thorough way of addressing client needs. She was able to look at clinical issues from multiple perspectives and with a real sense of fairness and respect for the client. Christiana is a rare find in this field!
