Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
As a first-generation, LGBTQ+ identifying, cisgender woman I know all too well the complexities that come with trying to "fit" in a world that is designed for the majority's expectations. I wanted to pursue a profession where I would be able to help others navigate the complexities of life, overcome surmounting obstacles, and cultivate mental and physical wellness. Mental health providers do just that!
What types of clients do you work with best?
I have worked with many different people over the last 10 years from those navigating anxiety, depression, and psychosis, to others who have been diagnosed with personality disorders, some who have been survivors of domestic abuse, and those who identify with LGBTQIA2S+ and other minority groups.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I'm excited to work with anyone who comes through my door (or virtual door!). I believe everyone has a unique story that I'm always eager to hear. So, when you invite me to be part of yours I'm given a unique opportunity to learn who you are and how I can help you.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
Thriveworks is a company that was built by other mental health professionals for the mental health professional and takes a client-centered approach. I liked the idea of a company that took care of their employees considering the high risk of burnout amongst mental health professionals. I also liked that Thriveworks focuses on client-centered care and allows therapists to work with their clients in unique ways to ensure all clients are afforded the best care.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
You can expect a session of getting to know one another. We will want to go through the intake process where I can gain a better sense of who you are, what you're coming to therapy for, and how we can best collaborate to make sure you get to where you want to be. And, if you don't know where you want to be that's fine! We'll continue to collaborate to find what works best for you!
What inspires you?
My undergraduate mentors (Dr. Kohlert, Dr. Coffin, Dr. O'Brein, Dr. Church, Dr. Butler & Mr. Alber), brother, and mother who taught me that my past experiences are responsible for who I am today whether the experience was negative, positive, or heartbreaking. Those without experience may sympathize, but those who've been through it can empathize like no other.
My experiences afforded me the opportunities to experience positivity, negativity, and heartbreak but through this, I've been inspired to help others navigate through difficult times, and life-changing events to strive for a sense of acceptance and peace.
Whether you're a first-generation student striving to find meaning and balance, an LGBTQIA2S+ identifying individual searching for your place in the world, or an individual who is struggling with an invisible illness you're journey inspires me to work hard to help you continue to prosper - even through it might not seem possible now.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
I want to make sure that you are comfortable with me. The first session comes with a lot of questions and sometimes those questions can be uncomfortable. I want to create an environment where you can feel at ease answering these questions as much as asking me questions. By the time we end our session, I want us to walk away feeling like we are going to be a great team.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first session?
What works for you in session may not work for another person. I strive to provide a unique therapy experience for each client because "one size does not fit all." Therapy is meant to be a conversation - we will chat, process, and revisit. I don't see people as their diagnosis - I see you for you.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I enjoy taking road trips, leisurely motorcycle rides, exploring national parks, attending comedy shows and concerts, and boxing.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
James Dean portrait tattoo on my forearm. He's the definition of complexity and an idol of mine! If you don't know him look him up - you won't regret it.
