Hear from our clinicians

What should someone do to prepare for starting online therapy?

To prepare for the first session, I feel clients should be aware of the intake process. I tell clients at that first meeting that some of the questions may not pertain to them or may not seen as relevant, but they are needed not only for insurance, but to develop a treatment plan to fit their personal needs.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in couples/marriage counseling?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in couples/marriage counseling when they are able to calmly and clearly express and receive the thoughts and feelings they are experiencing.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement family therapy?

Emily Warning
Emily Warning

Licensed Master Social Worker - Clinical (LMSW-Clinical)

Clients can supplement their time in family therapy with planning for regular connective time — no screens, no distractions, just good old-fashioned fun. It doesn't have to cost anything, but setting aside the time is so important.

What is your go-to approach for anxiety therapy?

Treating anxiety may look different for each individual. I prefer to focus on identifying what is activating those feelings/symptoms first; then we can focus on skills or tools to use during those times.

What tools do you teach in depression counseling?

When someone is depressed, it is first important to validate their emotions because they may not have received that from other people. I can find educating about the stages of change, stages of grief, and promoting self-care to be beneficial.

Life changing support and compassionate guidance. I have been seeing Jordan Arntz for just a couple months now and I can say it has been a truly transformative experience. From the first session Jordan made me feel comfortable, heard, and supported. They've created a safe and non-judgmental space. I have seen many therapists in my lifetime and this is a first that has allowed for such depth in self reflection, self compassion and self care. I have already recommended Thriveworks and Jordan to friends.

I am loving Thriveworks not only for the convenience of virtual appointments, but this is the first place I’ve tried that has actually helped. My therapist is incredibly kind and helpful and is amazing at helping me with any issues I’m struggling with. They paired me with a therapist that is experienced in the specific areas I needed help with, and it has been wonderful. I would absolutely recommend Thriveworks!

What Is the Difference Between Therapy, Counseling, and Psychiatry?

Therapy, provided by our counselors and therapists, addresses emotional and behavioral challenges using therapeutic techniques for mental well-being. Counseling, offered by counselors or therapists, focuses on specific issues and life adjustments, while psychiatry, led by our psychiatric nurse practitioners, involves diagnosing and treating mental health conditions with medication.

What Are the Types of Therapists You Can See?

While availability may vary, at Thriveworks Counseling & Psychiatry Grand Rapids, we offer:

  • Licensed Master Social Workers – Clinical (LMSW-Cs): Specialized in social work and counseling for individuals, families, and groups.
  • Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs): Focused on relationship and family-related issues.
  • Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs): Trained to offer counseling services for various emotional and mental health issues.

When you connect with a provider at Thriveworks, you’ll be sharing your experience with an industry-leading expert; someone with the experience and professional insight you need to move forward.

Call or Schedule Virtually with Thriveworks Counseling & Psychiatry Grand Rapids

At Thriveworks Counseling & Psychiatry Grand Rapids, we believe that everyone can benefit from counseling or coaching with a qualified, caring professional.

When you’re in the right hands, therapy works, but only as soon as you begin the process. That’s why we want to make sure we make our services as accessible as possible. Unlike other practices that ask you to leave a voicemail, we have people answering the phone 24 hours per day. Unlike practices that have a waiting list, we have none; first-time clients meet their counselor or coach within a few days of reaching out to us. As part of an ever-growing network of top-quality mental health care and customer service, our counselors are among the best in the field.
