Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)
Victoria: My go to approach for treating depression is to address negative thinking patterns that perpetuate negative mood. Also, I find it beneficial to address any behaviors that are contributing to the depression cycle, such as avoidance, rumination, and isolation.
Layla: I treat depression by exploring negative beliefs about oneself, teaching clients how to challenge or change those beliefs, and freeing them from those negative thoughts. This helps to boost self-esteem and come to terms with past issues that may be contributing to current depressive symptoms. I also help clients explore helpful tools to overcome depressive symptoms and make day-to-day functioning easier to manage.
Victoria: The tools I teach for depression therapy are as follows- mindfulness, cognitive reframing, thought challenging, behavioral activation, and self compassion.
Layla: I teach rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT) techniques to help identify and challenge self-defeating beliefs.
Victoria: I know that a client is making meaningful progress in depression therapy when they are actively challenging thoughts and behavioral patterns that perpetuate the cycle of depression.
Layla: I know a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling when they naturally make more positive statements about themselves, are better able to function in their day-to-day lives, and make peace with past mistakes or negative experiences.
Victoria: Clients can supplement their time in depression therapy with daily mindfulness and enjoyable and valued activities.
Layla: To supplement therapy, clients can work on self-care, practice positive self-affirmations, or read articles on ways to identify unhelpful thinking patterns and ways to change these patterns.
Victoria: To prepare for your first depression counseling session you can work on identifying triggers that worsen your mood, and think about how your depression has impacted your ability to function in relationships, work, and life in general.
Layla: I encourage clients to keep track of any negative or unhelpful thoughts that surface throughout the day, or that happen before episodes of depression. This can be a helpful way to identify potential triggers and make it easier to come up with strategies for addressing these triggering thoughts.
