What is your go-to approach for depression counseling?

My go to approach for treating depression is to address negative thinking patterns that perpetuate negative mood. Also, I find it beneficial to address any behaviors that are contributing to the depression cycle, such as avoidance, rumination, and isolation.

What tools do you teach in depression counseling?

The tools I teach for depression therapy are as follows- mindfulness, cognitive reframing, thought challenging, behavioral activation, and self compassion.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling?

I know that a client is making meaningful progress in depression therapy when they are actively challenging thoughts and behavioral patterns that perpetuate the cycle of depression.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement depression counseling?

Clients can supplement their time in depression therapy with daily mindfulness and enjoyable and valued activities.

What should someone do to prepare for starting depression counseling?

To prepare for your first depression counseling session you can work on identifying triggers that worsen your mood, and think about how your depression has impacted your ability to function in relationships, work, and life in general.

Need more help deciding?

Is the world a dark place? Is it overwhelming? Confusing? We all feel like this at times, but when you are suffering from depression or anxiety, it feels impossible to focus on anything else. Many people feel fearful, but not everyone experiences anxiety disorders. Everyone feels sad at times, but not everyone is depressed. If your daily life is becoming impaired by depression or anxiety, it might be time to connect with a Thriveworks Pittsburgh depression therapist or anxiety therapist. Additionally, if you are looking for depression or anxiety help for your child or teenager, Thriveworks Pittsburgh child therapists can help.

Depression: What Is It? How Can Depression Therapy Help?

Depression makes the simplest daily tasks difficult. Going to work, getting out of bed in the morning, making meals, eating, talking to loved ones—everything can feel overwhelmingly painful and challenging. When your loved ones are relying on you, you feel like you are letting everyone down. When you are struggling with depression, you may feel like everyone is out to get you, no one understands you, and your cries for help go answered. Thriveworks Pittsburgh depression counselors can offer help, guidance, and support during this difficult time.

There are many different options in the treatment for depression. Medications can sometimes be helpful, as well as talk therapy, and establishing a healthy routine for your daily life. Different courses of treatment work for different ages, personalities, and genders. We understand the different needs of individuals. Thriveworks Pittsburgh depression counselors will work with you or your child to explore many different treatment options, and then create a personalized treatment plan for the individual, often using a combination of techniques. Remember: you don’t have to go through this alone.

Understanding Anxiety Disorders: What Is Anxiety?

There is no limit to the amount of things there are to worry about in this world. Disease, violence, natural disasters, job security; these things can be overwhelming. And for some, anxiety issues can become so severe that it’s difficult to complete even simple daily life tasks. These disorders can appear at any time in life and come on suddenly or over a long period of time.

There are many different types of anxiety issue and disorders. These include:

  • School phobia (particularly in children)
  • Generalized anxiety disorder
  • Social anxiety
  • Phobias
  • Panic disorder
  • Agoraphobia (fear of specific places or situations)
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Separation Anxiety

Anxiety disorders can be very troubling for the person suffering from them, and also for their loved ones. When you have to avoid many different places and situations in order to not suffer from anxiety, you feel like a prisoner in your own life.

For a child, having issues with anxiety may be difficult to understand. These problems can appear differently in children, perhaps with the child or teen seeming angry or uninterested in school or sports. Thriveworks Pittsburgh anxiety therapists can help your child express their feelings in a clear way. Although the world is overwhelming for adults with anxiety, it is even more so for children. Thriveworks Pittsburgh counselors can be a guiding light for the entire family when they are struggling with anxiety.
