Hear from our clinicians

What is your go-to approach for individual therapy?

Monica Cwynar
Monica Cwynar

Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)

My go-to approach is to meet people where they are from a nonjudgmental place while providing a safe space. I find that people benefit from being heard in a judgment-free space because it takes a lot to ask for help.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement individual therapy?

Monica Cwynar
Monica Cwynar

Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)

Clients can supplement their time by completing the homework that is given after each session. I know therapy has to continue in between sessions, so I usually suggest homework, which can be reading or journal prompts or something specific to their situation.

What is your go-to approach for online therapy?

Barbara Thomas
Barbara Thomas

Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT)

My go-to approach for helping people in online counseling is collaborative therapy. I prefer collaborative therapy because it provides the context of each client being the expert in their lives and actively working with me, the therapist, who has expertise in psychology. Additionally, with online counseling there can be additional comfort in your own home and allow flexibility that make it feel more like a collaboration rather than a clinical appointment.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy?

Barbara Thomas
Barbara Thomas

Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT)

I know a client is making meaningful progress in online counseling when they begin to notice their perspective shift and highlight their own empowerment, have increased awareness of their triggers, and actively acknowledge their basic needs. Additionally, the goals that we set will have a frequency that we will work towards, for example increasing self-care skills or decreasing symptoms. I always like to preface that progress is not linear and will be an ongoing tool during treatment to challenge negative perceptions of self.

What should someone do to prepare for starting couples/marriage counseling?

Molly Maureen Alvord
Molly Maureen Alvord

Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)

To prepare for your first couples/marriage counseling session, you can make a list of questions and/or concerns. During the first session, I need to ask about background information as well as the current issues. Have a list of prior mental health treatments with dates and names if possible. But most of all, be kind to yourself and allow yourself to be open to the idea of exploring the status of the relationship and learning new communication/listening skills.

Experience effective therapy with a counselor or therapist in Pittsburgh

Depression, anxiety, addiction, relationship issues, or any other mental health challenge can make life very lonely and confusing. One of the hardest parts is knowing who to count on. Certainly, friends and family members can be very helpful in the midst of hard times, but many people face difficulties that need more support and care than loved ones can offer.

The mental health professionals at Thriveworks Counseling & Psychiatry Pittsburgh can be your trusted partner in taking care of your mental health. We offer mental health care that ranges from therapy to counseling, life coaching, and more.

What Is the Difference Between Therapy, Counseling, and Psychiatry?

Therapy, provided by our counselors and therapists, addresses emotional and behavioral challenges using therapeutic techniques for mental well-being. Counseling, offered by counselors or therapists, focuses on specific issues and life adjustments, while psychiatry, led by our psychiatric nurse practitioners, involves diagnosing and treating mental health conditions with medication.

What Are the Types of Therapists You Can See?

While availability may vary, at Thriveworks Counseling & Psychiatry Pittsburgh, we offer:

  • Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs): Specialized in social work and counseling for individuals, families, and groups.
  • Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs): Focused on relationship and family-related issues.
  • Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs): Trained to offer counseling services for various emotional and mental health issues.

When you connect with a provider at Thriveworks, you’ll be sharing your experience with an industry-leading expert; someone with the experience and professional insight you need to move forward.

How Do I Find the Right Therapist near me?

To find the right therapist or therapeutic approach at Thriveworks, browse our provider profiles, or contact your local office at (412) 561-9950 to discuss your needs and preferences with our helpful support team.

Are the Therapists at Thriveworks Licensed and Verified to Provide Therapy?

Yes, all of our therapists, counselors, and psychiatric nurse practitioners are licensed or in the process of receiving their licensure.

What Are the Benefits of Online Therapy and In-Person Therapy?

The benefits of online therapy include:

  • Convenience and accessibility from anywhere
  • Reduced travel time and costs
  • Comfortable and familiar environment
  • A wider selection of therapists to choose from

The benefits of in-person therapy include:

  • Face-to-face interaction and non-verbal cues
  • No reliance on internet connection or technology
  • Privacy and confidentiality in a physical office

Signs I Should Go to Therapy

Some of the signs you might benefit from therapy or psychiatric services include:

  • Persistent feelings of sadness, anxiety, or hopelessness
  • Difficulty managing and coping with daily stress
  • Strained or troubled relationships with family, friends, or partners
  • Overwhelming grief after a significant loss
  • Frequent mood swings, anger, or irritability
  • Changes in appetite, sleep patterns, or energy levels
  • Unresolved trauma or past experiences affecting your well-being
  • Struggles with addictive behaviors or substance abuse
  • Loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities
  • Overwhelming feelings of guilt, shame, or worthlessness

Don’t hesitate to reach out to one of our providers if you’re feeling any of these symptoms.

What Should I Do If a Loved One Needs Help?

If you have a loved one who is in need of mental health services, you can help them by attempting to:

  • Communicate openly and non-judgmentally
  • Offer support and encourage them to seek professional help
  • Research and connect them with appropriate resources
  • Be patient and maintain a supportive presence throughout their journey to recovery

Our experienced therapists, counselors, and psychiatric nurse practitioners can assist—don’t hesitate to have the individual you love seek help and support.

How Much Does Therapy Cost?

At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state. More information on current self-pay costs is available on our pricing page.
