What is your go-to approach for individual therapy?

My go-to approach for helping people in individual therapy is a person-centered, integrative method that adapts to the unique needs of each client. I prefer a combination of active listening, cognitive behavioral techniques, and mindfulness-based strategies because they empower clients to gain insight, challenge unhelpful patterns, and develop practical tools for managing their lives. I enjoy creating a safe, nonjudgmental space where clients feel seen and heard, as I believe this is the foundation for meaningful growth. I find the best benefit in working collaboratively to set achievable goals, helping clients build resilience and a sense of agency in their lives. Whether addressing anxiety, depression, trauma, or other challenges, I tailor my approach to the individual, recognizing that each person's journey is deeply personal and unique.

What tools do you teach in individual therapy?

I teach the following tools in individual therapy:

  • Mindfulness techniques: Practices like deep breathing, grounding exercises, and body scans to help clients stay present and reduce anxiety.
  • Cognitive restructuring: Identifying and challenging negative thought patterns to promote healthier and more balanced thinking.
  • Emotional regulation skills: Strategies such as journaling, emotion labeling, and distress tolerance techniques to help clients manage intense feelings.
  • Communication and assertiveness training: Tools for improving interpersonal effectiveness, setting boundaries, and expressing needs clearly.
  • Behavioral activation: Encouraging engagement in meaningful activities to counteract depressive symptoms and improve mood.
  • Relaxation techniques: Guided imagery, progressive muscle relaxation, or meditation to reduce stress and promote calm.
  • Problem-solving skills: Structured approaches for identifying challenges, generating solutions, and evaluating outcomes.
  • Coping strategies for stress and triggers: Customized techniques like creating a 'coping toolbox' to address specific challenges in daily life.
  • Self-compassion practices: Exercises to foster kindness toward oneself, reduce self-criticism, and build inner resilience.
Each of these tools is tailored to the client's unique goals, helping them build confidence and self-efficacy as they navigate their personal growth journey.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in individual therapy?

I am aware that individuals are making meaningful progress when they report positive differences in their lives.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement individual therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in individual therapy with intentional activities that reinforce their progress and support their well-being. These activities may include:

  • Journaling: Writing down thoughts, emotions, and experiences to process feelings and track personal growth.
  • Practicing skills: Actively using tools learned in therapy, such as mindfulness exercises, grounding techniques, or cognitive restructuring, in daily life.
  • Engaging in self-care: Prioritizing activities that nurture mental, physical, and emotional health, such as regular exercise, healthy eating, sufficient sleep, and hobbies that bring joy.
  • Reflecting on sessions: Taking time after therapy sessions to think about key takeaways and how they can be applied to real-life situations.
  • Reading or learning: Exploring books, articles, or podcasts on topics related to personal growth, mental health, or specific challenges they're working through in therapy.
  • Connecting with supportive people: Spending time with friends, family, or support groups that foster a sense of belonging and encouragement.
  • Setting goals: Identifying small, achievable steps toward personal objectives and tracking progress over time.
  • Practicing gratitude: Keeping a gratitude journal or engaging in other practices to shift focus toward positive aspects of life.
These activities can enhance the therapeutic process by promoting self-awareness, resilience, and a sense of empowerment between sessions.

What should someone do to prepare for starting individual therapy?

Starting Individual therapy

What is individual therapy?

Individual therapy, also known as Individual therapy, allows people to engage in private sessions with a skilled therapist, counselor, or psychologist. The core objective of individual therapy is to establish a secure and confidential setting where you can openly discuss whatever emotional, psychological, or behavioral challenges you face. Through these one-on-one sessions, the client and therapist work together to delve into, comprehend, and ultimately find solutions for the issues at hand in their life.

How does individual therapy work?

Individual therapy unfolds in a structured process, commencing with an initial assessment in which the therapist gathers essential information about your history, concerns, and objectives. Together, you and your therapist collaboratively establish specific, attainable goals for your sessions, which can encompass symptom alleviation, personal development, or finding solutions to particular challenges.

Rachel is a great therapist who has helped me a lot with my social anxiety! Even when I don't bring enough issues to fill the hour, she doesn't mind just having pleasant conversation which isn't something I've experienced with some therapists.
