Darryl G. McCarroll (Dr. D) is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker & Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist Associate. Darryl works with individuals and couples who are in need of an empowering, motivated therapist. With experience in sex therapy as well as treating military soldiers and veterans, men, and seniors, Darryl believes in empowering his clients and assisting them with finding their truth. Darryl attended Western Illinois University for undergraduate studies in Journalism, earned a Master’s degree in Social Work, and completed his Doctoral studies at Walden University with honors.
Darryl is a board-certified hypnotherapist with advanced training in CBT, CPT, EMDR, EFT, and DBT. Darryl believes that diverse life experiences create a unique understanding of the human condition, such as mental health and daily challenges each adult will face at one point or another in their life.
Life is tough, but each of us have our own superpowers that allow us to cope. Darryl’s job as a therapist is to assist you with getting in touch with that power and learning coping skills to find what you want or need. If you get the opportunity to work with Dr. D, you may find the power to make changes, feel empowered, and find your inner strengths.

My experience as a disabled therapist informs a strengths-based practice rooted in acceptance, accessibility, and a deep empathy of navigating real-world barriers.
I am a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Associate with six years of experience providing therapy in North Carolina. I specialize in supporting children, young adults, and adults as they navigate challenges such as anxiety, depression, autism, and ADHD. Living with a disability myself, I bring a unique perspective and deep understanding to my work, particularly with clients experiencing chronic illness or pain. My goal is to create a safe, supportive space where clients feel heard, valued, and empowered.
I earned my Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of Texas at San Antonio. I use an integrative style that combines cognitive-behavioral and somatic techniques while keeping sessions interactive, collaborative, and goal-focused. I emphasize compassion and practical tools to help clients build confidence and resilience.
I know seeking therapy can feel overwhelming, and I want you to know your experiences and feelings matter. Together, we will explore challenges, celebrate strengths, and work toward meaningful growth. I invite you to take the next step in your journey, and I am here to support you with care and understanding.
You deserve dedicated time with a mental health professional — it can be life-changing.

Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC)
Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
DeJuan: My go-to approach for helping people in PTSD/trauma therapy is CBT and some exposure therapy.
Darryl: My approach to treating PTSD is a combination of teaching clients skills to address their symptoms and helping them think better about themselves, others, and their environment. Clients also learn ways to cope if any symptoms arise again. I treat other problems often related to traumatic experiences, such as depression, anxiety, or misuse of alcohol or drugs. The modality I perform is eye movement desensitization and reprocessing. Last, I teach strategies and psychoeducation so the client can self-advocate and recognize how to improve the quality of their lives.
DeJuan: My objective in treatment is to improve symptoms, teach skills, and improve self-esteem.
Darryl: I educate each client about their mental health diagnoses, bilateral stimulation, and self-calming techniques. I teach my clients how to develop the data they need to improve their mental health.
DeJuan: I know a client is making meaningful progress in therapy when the negative impact of trauma-related symptoms is not as intense as they were when treatment started.
Darryl: I know my clients are making meaningful progress with their PTSD symptoms when they report that the disturbance levels of their target symptomatic PTSD memory have ceased or been significantly reduced to a level that the client will manage by understanding the context of their PTSD.
DeJuan: Clients can supplement their time in PTSD/trauma therapy by implementing calming skills, such as deep breathing, relaxation, and calming self-talk.
Darryl: The client can supplement PTSD and other traumas by learning viable sleep routines and consuming an appropriate healthy diet. They can also increase personal exercise strategies, learn to manage their emotions, and encourage full medication compliance. I also encourage the client to learn self-guided relaxation techniques to practice daily.
DeJuan: To prepare for their first PTSD/trauma therapy session, someone can make a list of symptoms and their duration, try to recall key points of experiences, write down things they have stopped doing or avoid doing b/c of the trauma, and write down any questions they may have.
Darryl: I encourage each client, before starting their PTSD/trauma session, to document their target memories so we can process and later reprocess the memories that cause the impairment in the quality of their life.

If a client is working through a single traumatic event that occurred as an adult, trauma or PTSD therapy may only take a few months, but in general, it can take a year or more to effectively treat trauma symptoms and PTSD. The duration of treatment is highly dependent on the client and the severity of their symptoms.
