What is psychological testing and assessment?

Psychological testing is the method psychologists and therapists use to objectively evaluate the behavior of their clients. It’s often used as an accompaniment or precursor to therapy. But it can also be offered as a standalone psychological service.

Here are just a few of the areas psychological testing can measure:

  • Aptitude
  • Emotional functioning
  • Personality

Psychological testing can be used to determine eligibility for mental health services and accommodations for standardized tests (such as SAT, ACT, etc.). It’s also sometimes used in court to determine if a person is fit to stand trial.

Is there a difference between testing and assessment?

You will sometimes hear the two terms used interchangeably, but there is an important distinction between them. Testing refers to the actual written or computer-based tests that evaluate a person’s behavior or personality. An good example of a psychological test is an IQ test.

Psychological assessment, on the other hand, refers to the combined approach of evaluating an individual’s behavior. Assessment might include testing, clinical interviews, and other methods.

Who can benefit from psychological testing and assessment?

Psychological testing and assessment covers such a broad range of applications, it has a practical use for just about anybody.

What are the different types of psychological testing and assessment?

There are too many to list them all here, but here are just a few:

  • IQ testing
  • Personality testing
