What is your go-to approach for PTSD/trauma therapy?

Clinicians use various techniques to treat PTSD/trauma, including cognitive behavioral therapy tools, mindfulness meditations, deep breathing exercises, and emotional validation to help clients overcome the negative impacts of trauma. I also like to place emphasis on establishing appropriate supports and self-care routines when treating individuals who have experienced trauma.

What tools do you teach in PTSD/trauma therapy?

I tend to focus on teaching various grounding techniques, such as the 5-4-3-2-1 technique, body awareness, and mental exercises to help reduce negative symptoms related to trauma. I also emphasize the importance of validating the client's feelings related to trauma while still addressing inappropriate guilt or blame. My goal is to help clients recognize their strength as survivors of trauma and their ability to grow through trauma.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in PTSD/trauma therapy?

I usually know a client is making meaningful progress in PTSD/trauma therapy when they are able to accept traumatic things that happened to them while not feeling defined or controlled by them. I will usually check in frequently with the client regarding their perceived progress and complete multiple scales throughout the therapeutic process to monitor changes (PHQ-9, GAD-7, PCL-5).

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement PTSD/trauma therapy?

I encourage clients to supplement their time in PTSD/trauma therapy by journaling, seeking out additional social supports when available, and developing appropriate and active self-care routines.

What should someone do to prepare for starting PTSD/trauma therapy?

To prepare for your first therapy session, you can:

  • Make a list of questions and/or concerns.
  • Bring a list of any medications that you are taking (prescription, OTC, and supplements).
  • Have a list of prior mental health treatments, with dates and names if possible.
Most of all, though, be kind to yourself and allow yourself to be open to the idea of exploring your thoughts and emotions.
