What is your go-to approach for anxiety therapy?

My go-to approach for helping clients with anxiety is to focus on validating their emotions while learning cognitive behavioral techniques to confront anxious thinking and anxiety-provoking behaviors. My goal is to help clients be more present-minded, grounded, and relaxed.

I mainly use CBT and motivational interviewing; I find the best benefit in challenging negative automatic thoughts and identifying what events in the client's past may have influenced those thoughts. I encourage my clients to face their fear and allow themselves to “ride the wave” of anxiety rather than fight against it.

My go-to approach for helping individuals with depression is to provide an environment where clients feel safe within their own vulnerability, and feel empowered to thrive again despite their depression. My goal is to help clients address triggers for depression, work toward finding ways to express themselves appropriately without guilt or shame, and confront negative thoughts and self-concepts that contribute to a decline in their mood.

What tools do you teach in anxiety therapy?

I believe that active coping skills such as relaxation techniques (yoga, walking, aromatherapy, meditation, listening to music, etc.), breathing exercises, and positive self-talk are all keys to managing anxiety. I also teach clients to be more aware of specific triggers and warning signs of anxiety, and to develop plans to address potential triggers.

I teach:

  • The CBT triangle
  • Radical acceptance
  • Identifying “should/could/would” and “what if” thoughts
  • Mindfulness techniques
  • Grounding

I prefer to use techniques that are based in cognitive behavioral and solution-focused therapies, in addition to positive psychology tools such as positive thinking, identifying and confronting thought distortions, cognitive restructuring, improving self-esteem, mindfulness, breathing exercises, behavioral activation, etc.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in anxiety therapy?

I usually know when a client is making meaningful progress in therapy based on the severity of both their self-reported and observed symptoms of anxiety. I periodically request that clients complete a short assessment to help measure the severity of their anxiety and compare it to an assessment completed earlier in the therapeutic process.

I know a client is making meaningful progress when they are no longer limited by their anxieties and are not avoiding previously anxiety-inducing situations/triggers.

Similarly to when I work with clients with anxiety, I usually know when a client is making meaningful progress in therapy based on the severity of both their self-reported and observed symptoms of depression. I periodically request that clients complete a short assessment to help measure the severity of their depression and compare it to an assessment completed earlier in the therapeutic process.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement anxiety therapy?

In anxiety therapy, it's usually good practice to have homework that reinforces strategies learned or introduced in the therapy session.

Clients can supplement therapy by challenging anxious thoughts, exposing themselves to anxiety-inducing situations, and practicing relaxation and mindfulness skills.

In depression counseling, I use homework exercises, journaling, goal-setting plans, and self-care schedules to help reinforce strategies learned or introduced in the therapy session.

What should someone do to prepare for starting anxiety therapy?

I always encourage clients to ask questions and to be totally honest in preparation for their first therapy session. As a clinician, I always try my best to provide a safe and judgment-free space for my clients.

I don't think clients need to prepare for their anxiety treatment. They just need to show up and be willing to do the work!

I always encourage clients to ask questions and to be totally honest in preparation for their first therapy session. As a clinician, I always try my best to provide a safe and judgment-free space for my clients.

Christy made me feel comfortable right away. I had been working with another local therapist who I loved, but who is moving and I was nervous about switching. But Christy has been fantastic already just in our first two visits. Would definitely recommend Christy and Thriveworks

I was matched with Ms Geneen Brown a little over 2 years ago & it's been the best match ever. She's helped me so much. I was one of those people who thought asking for help from a therapist was silly. I can say nothing but amazing things about Thriveworks & Geneen.
