Starting Premarital counseling

What is Premarital counseling?

Premarital counseling is a type of therapy that helps couples prepare for and build a happy, successful marriage. Premarital therapists at Thriveworks in Sterling Heights, MI can help couples develop essential communication skills, identify potential conflict areas, and learn how to manage their specific relationship issues.

How does Premarital counseling work?

When you and your partner begin premarital counseling, your counselor will want to get to know you both as well as your relationship. In order to accomplish this, they will ask questions around the following:

  • Common interests and activities
  • Marital expectations
  • Budget and Finance
  • Children and parenting
  • Intimacy

If there is a particular area that they feel needs to be explored further (for example, you note that you and your partner have very different spending habits and views on money), they’ll guide the conversation in the given direction.

Is Premarital counseling conducted in person or online?

Premarital counseling at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and through Online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you and your partner.

How long does Premarital counseling last?

Generally speaking, Thriveworks premarital counseling in Sterling Heights typically lasts for 8-10 weeks. This, however, can vary depending on the counselor’s approach as well as the clients’ preferences and needs. For example, some couples might request additional sessions to work through problem areas that they’ve identified in their relationship, pre-wedding.

Need more help deciding?

Many people fantasize about the day that they get married. They create Pinterest boards, filled with ideas for a venue, dress, and flower arrangement as early as 13 years old. And when they’re finally engaged, they talk excitedly with their partner about the beautiful wedding and wonderful day they’ll have in just a few short months. What they often don’t discuss, is how they’ll continue to foster a happy, healthy relationship and create a marriage that lasts.

“Every successful marriage is the result of two people working diligently and skillfully to cultivate their love.”

–Henry Ward Beecher

If you and your partner are thinking about marriage, or you’re already engaged, consider working with a premarital counselor. These professionals help couples to understand if marriage is right for them and then to get ready for that life-long commitment. Premarital counseling often involves working through current issues, discussing concerns about marriage, and improving communication efforts.

Reach out to Thriveworks Sterling Heights in Macomb, MI today to begin work with one of our premarital counselors. Every provider at Thriveworks is carefully chosen, based on their expertise and their experience. We have counselors on staff who specialize in helping couples discuss marriage and build a happy life together for many years to come.

Benefits of Premarital Counseling

As we touched on above, premarital counseling can benefit engaged couples as well as couples who are still talking about the possibility of marriage. It proves to prevent divorce, as it helps couples to understand if they’re a good fit as well as how they can weather the storms together.

The premarital counselors at Thriveworks Sterling Heights in Macomb County will work with you and your partner to understand what your relationship needs to have a successful marriage. Some topics that might come up or that commonly come up in premarital counseling include:

  • Role expectations
  • Interests and hobbies
  • Work schedules
  • Intimacy
  • Children
  • Parenting Styles
  • 5-year, 10-year visions

How Does Premarital Counseling Work?

Once your Thriveworks Sterling Heights premarital counselor in Macomb understands the needs of your relationship, they will customize your treatment plan. Some premarital counselors will decide to meet with each individual separately, in addition to working with the couple together, to best understand individual concerns and attitudes. Others will only work with the couple together, so as to focus on the two as one entity from the very start. In either case, as premarital counseling progresses, you and partner will work through problem areas, better understand the true vision of a marriage between the two of you and acquire tools for happy relationship building.

Your Thriveworks Sterling Heights premarital counselor in Macomb might also use resources to help you and your partner along. For example, they might give you a Couples Resource map, which assist each individual in finding helpful resources and strategies for managing conflict. You would likely complete this map after your therapy session and bring it back with you for each appointment.

My overall experience has been as expected when dealing with behavior healthcare. There is no real care for the patient and their needs. I spent an hour on the phone with a call center rep from the billing department who said I had no insurance on file, then proceeded to transfer me to the correct department who said I did. I have been without medication that was prescribed on Monday. When I received a call back from the psychiatrist, it seemed that your company forgot to send it over. That is unacceptable behavior when it comes to dealing with any customer.

It's a wonderful experience working with Cornelia Golden. She presents a healthy balance of comfortability and professionalism. She listens with the intent to hear what is being said and yet hear what's not being said. Cornelia has a very calming presence and I feel both confident in her counseling skills and that my concerns are professionally cared for. She is a very capable counselor. Clients will greatly benefit from working with her. I am happy to write this review for Ms. Cornelis Golden.
