Starting Marriage counseling

What is Marriage counseling?

Marriage counseling, also known as couples therapy and relationship counseling, helps couples work through their specific relationship issues. Thriveworks marriage counseling in Sterling Heights, MI is led by licensed professionals — often licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) — who are experts in their field and best-equipped to help couples. Some examples of common focuses within Marriage counseling include:

  • Jealousy
  • Trust issues
  • Infidelity
  • Opposing values
  • Different visions for the future
  • Disagreements in parenting
  • Lack of trust
  • Financial distress
  • Sex issues

How does Marriage counseling work?

Marriage counseling works by helping couples identify and better navigate their unique challenges. Following an initial assessment of the couple in terms of strengths and needs, the therapist would then discuss their therapeutic goals and any possible approaches or ways of working together as therapist and couple.
Couples attend sessions together, whether they meet in person or by video. In addition to regular marriage counseling sessions, each partner may also be asked to attend a few individual sessions to supplement their progress. This will allow their counselor to get to know each individual better, assess each of their personal needs, and develop the very best treatment plan moving forward.

Is Marriage counseling conducted in person or online?

Marriage counseling at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you and your partner.

How long does Marriage counseling last?

On average, couples attend marriage counseling for 12 weeks. However, marriage counseling may last longer or shorter, dependent on the couples' needs, the challenges they'd like to work through, and the pace of their progress. Marriage counselors and therapists at Thriveworks in Sterling Heights, MI work with their clients to create goals, decide on ideal timelines, and establish treatment plans.

Need more help deciding?

Love often leads two people into marriage: the commitment to take on the rest of life together. Until then, a couple will fantasize about spending every waking moment in each other’s company; they’ll imagine a happy life with a loving family; they’ll look forward to all of the good memories that are to come. What they often forget, though, is that marriage takes hard work. It isn’t always happy or good—there will be conflict and obstacles to overcome.

“A great marriage doesn’t happen because of the love you had in the beginning, but how well you continue building love until the end.”

The hard-hitting truth is that many marriages do end in divorce. Why? Because couples fail to address, manage, and resolve the conflicts that plague their relationship. The good news is that this doesn’t have to be every couple’s fate. If you’re struggling to overcome obstacles on your own, you can choose to work with a marriage counselor who has the skills and expertise to help you through the challenges that arise in your marriage.

Thriveworks Sterling Heights in Macomb has skilled, experienced, caring marriage counselors on staff. If you are in the Detroit, MI area looking for therapy, these professionals are ready to help you and your spouse clear the hurdles standing in your way of a happy, healthy life together. Do My Spouse and I Need Marriage Counseling?

It’s easy to put your relationship on the back-burner, considering everything else going on in your life. Many of us make the mistake of thinking that our marriage doesn’t need a whole lot of time and attention; that it can take the backseat. In reality, the relationship we build with our spouse will always need time and attention. Now is not the time to forget about or neglect the love that you have for this individual. If you do continue to put your marriage on the back-burner, you will likely run into more and more conflict. Here are a few topics often discussed in marriage counseling:

  • Lack of communication
  • Jealousy
  • Intimacy issues
  • Parenting disagreements
  • Infidelity/adultery
  • Individual goals and fulfillment

Have you and your spouse run into any of the above problems? Have you been searching for Macomb therapy to get marriage help? If so, a marriage counselor at Thriveworks Sterling Heights in Macomb can help you to address and manage it properly. They can help you address and manage issues not on this list as well! They’re here to help your relationship however they can.

What Can I Expect from Marriage Counseling?

Your experience in marriage counselor will depend on your relationship needs. Your therapist or psychologist will first assess your marriage, the issues you identify, and then structure your sessions based on that information. This allows them to create the best possible treatment plan for you and your spouse.

That said, marriage counselor does often involve talking about effective communication and conflict resolution skills. These are both crucial to building and maintaining a happy, healthy marriage over many years. You can look back on these lessons learned in marriage counseling when issues arise in the future. Remember that the marriage therapists at Thriveworks Sterling Heights Counseling are dedicated to providing you with every effective tool possible, including the Gottman Method. My overall experience has been as expected when dealing with behavior healthcare. There is no real care for the patient and their needs. I spent an hour on the phone with a call center rep from the billing department who said I had no insurance on file, then proceeded to transfer me to the correct department who said I did. I have been without medication that was prescribed on Monday. When I received a call back from the psychiatrist, it seemed that your company forgot to send it over. That is unacceptable behavior when it comes to dealing with any customer.

It's a wonderful experience working with Cornelia Golden. She presents a healthy balance of comfortability and professionalism. She listens with the intent to hear what is being said and yet hear what's not being said. Cornelia has a very calming presence and I feel both confident in her counseling skills and that my concerns are professionally cared for. She is a very capable counselor. Clients will greatly benefit from working with her. I am happy to write this review for Ms. Cornelis Golden.
