Thriveworks helped me realize that I do believe people can change. I’m not the person I was three months ago, broken and fearful. I’m healthy and happy and for the first time being kind to myself. Thank you for giving me my life back.

What Is the Difference Between Therapy, Counseling, and Psychiatry?

Therapy, provided by our counselors and therapists, addresses emotional and behavioral challenges using therapeutic techniques for mental well-being. Counseling, offered by counselors or therapists, focuses on specific issues and life adjustments, while psychiatry, led by our psychiatric nurse practitioners, involves diagnosing and treating mental health conditions with medication.

What Are the Types of Therapists You Can See?

While availability may vary, at Thriveworks Counseling & Psychiatry Amherst, we offer:

  • Licensed Independent Clinical Social Workers (LICSWs): Specialized in social work and counseling for individuals, families, and groups.
  • Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs): Focused on relationship and family-related issues.
  • Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs): Trained to offer counseling services for various emotional and mental health issues.

When you connect with a provider at Thriveworks, you’ll be sharing your experience with an industry-leading expert; someone with the experience and professional insight you need to move forward.

What Can I Expect from an In-Person or Online Therapy Session?

No two people’s needs are identical, regardless of their diagnosis. It is important for you to find a therapist, counselor, or life coach who you can trust and who you feel understands your needs.

Counseling sessions will be tailored to benefit you. Your therapist will discuss with you the challenges you face as well as your goals for counseling. Once an understanding of your individual needs is established, they will design a treatment plan specifically for you.

In some cases, your therapist may refer you to a specialist to help. Our network of mental health professionals within our offices will help to simplify this process for you.

We also provide different session types to accommodate your needs or restrictions. Many people are more comfortable with traditional, in-person, face-to-face counseling. We have offices throughout Western Massachusetts that are open for appointments in a safe and socially-distanced setting. In addition, we provide various forms of remote therapy including telehealth services where you can meet with your therapist from the comfort of your own home.

Whether you prefer one or the other or a combination of both, therapists in Amherst, MA are available and would like to provide you with the safest and most comfortable therapy for your needs.
