Hear from our clinicians

What is your go-to approach for online therapy?

Rosalie: My go-to approach is to understand where clients are at in their lives and what their goals are in therapy. Determining goals is important because they help the client take ownership of the process of therapeutic growth.

Amanda: My typical approach for online therapy is to help create a safe and comfortable environment first, and ensure each client gets a similar experience as they would in my office. I typically like to focus on the strengths that a client already possesses to help them recognize that they have the power to change.

What tools do you teach in online therapy?

Rosalie: I use feeling charts, meditation, recommended readings, and therapy card decks.

Amanda: I teach the following tools in online therapy:

  • Mindfulness techniques - recognizing emotions and thoughts by being “curious” and having a non-judgmental perspective.
  • Relaxation strategies - practices such as deep breathing exercises, progressive muscle relaxation, and safe place visualization that assist with managing symptoms, distress, and emotion regulation.
  • Behavioral activation - identifying activities, behaviors, and habits that can help enhance mood, and then encouraging clients to practice.
  • Journal techniques - each person’s journal is unique to their preferences; this can be writing down thoughts, feelings, and ideas (whether positive or negative), drawing to express feelings, voice recordings, video recordings, etc.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy?

Rosalie: I know a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy when they are consistently attending therapy, utilizing the tools offered in therapy, and self-reporting that they see a positive improvement in their quality of life and mental health.

Amanda: I know someone is making meaningful progress in online therapy when the individual says they have noticed an improvement in how they view themselves and feel more empowered to work towards their goals in life. I also know they are making progress when they begin to experience improved well-being.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement online therapy?

Rosalie: Clients can read supportive literature, educate themselves with materials that are supportive of their therapeutic process, attend support groups (if wanted or needed), and reflect on their progress through journaling or other forms of self-expression.

Amanda: Clients can supplement their online therapy by practicing techniques we discussed, checking in with themselves outside of sessions (which I call “mini self-therapy” sessions), journaling, practicing basic self-care techniques, and reading information to learn more about their symptoms.

What should someone do to prepare for starting online therapy?

Rosalie: To prepare, you can determine your goals for therapy and conceptualize what you want out of the therapeutic relationship.

Amanda: To prepare for your first online therapy session, you can think about or write down what you would like to let me know, provide information you think will be pertinent to your therapy, and have some ideas as to your intentions and goals for therapy.

Starting Online therapy

What is online therapy?

With Thriveworks, Online therapy is an effective alternative to in-person therapy services in which a client can speak to a Thriveworks therapist remotely via online video conferencing. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person treatment, but they can also provide added benefits like reduced travel time, saving money on transportation or childcare, and increased access to care.

How does online therapy work?

Online therapy works much like traditional in-person therapy but takes place through secure video conferencing. Clients can attend Online therapy from any safe place they choose that has access to the internet, whether that be their home or another easily accessible place. Like in-person treatment, a therapist will work with their client to address their concerns, create goals, and establish an effective treatment plan.

What is the best option for online therapy?

There is no best option for online therapy—instead, it’s best to focus on finding a provider that meets your specific needs and with whom you can form a professional connection with.

Is online therapy just as effective?

Yes, online therapy is just as effetive for many clients as in-person sessions.

How long does online therapy last?

Online therapy can last for a few months to years depending on the goals and symptoms of the client. The treatment process will be unique to each client and lend itself to their specific concerns, which means that the time it takes to treat them will always be different. Timing is also up to the client themselves; they are free to stop therapy whenever they please, especially if they feel they have reached their goals and addressed their concerns.

How much does online therapy cost?

At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state. More information on current self-pay costs is available on our pricing page.

What Is Online Therapy All About?

Online therapy sessions are simple: It’s just like a normal, in-person therapy session except you attend via video, phone, or email. These therapists are fully licensed, and those at Thriveworks Counseling in Boca Raton, FL have an impressive number of skills as well as knowledge and experience that enables them to best help you with any given challenge.

Let’s talk a little bit more about your online therapy options. As we mention above, you can choose to work with your online therapist via video, phone, or email:

  1. Phone therapy: With this option, you schedule a day and time to work with your therapist over the phone. You simply answer their call at the agreed upon time!
  2. Video therapy: This is like phone therapy, as you agree on a day and time to talk to your therapist who will reach out via video chat. This is a good option for those who still want and enjoy the face-to-face dynamic in a normal therapy session.
  3. Email or chat therapy: This third option is different from the first two in that it occurs over an extended period of time. Instead of emailing or chatting with your therapist for a set 90 minutes, you will do so over a more flexible time period. It’s just like your normal conversations over email or chat widget!

Many people choose online counseling therapy over in-person therapy for a variety of reasons, including convenience and flexibility. These individuals often find fitting a therapy appointment into their already busy schedule difficult. They find refuge in online therapy, as they can attend their session anywhere and don’t have to spend time traveling to the office.

Get Therapy Online: What Are the Benefits?

If online therapy is new to you, you might be wondering how it differs from in-person therapy and how it can benefit you. Here are a couple main benefits that bring people to online therapy:

  • It’s convenient! Most people choose online therapy over in-person therapy due to the lure of convenience. Online therapy sessions are convenient in a way that in-person therapy is not, as you can attend your therapy session from virtually anywhere in the world… as long as you have access to your phone (if that’s the type of online therapy you choose) or the internet. This eliminates the struggle that is making it to an appointment before, during, or after work.
  • It’s comfortable. Also, many people find that online therapy is much more comfortable than in-person therapy, in a couple of different ways. First, it’s more comfortable in the literal sense as one can attend it from the comfort of their home. Second, it’s more comfortable in a mental and emotional sense for many people who struggle to open up.

Pamela really helped me through some difficult issues; she helped me to understand the people in my life and how to interact with them and understand why they are how to understand them. With that knowledge, I am better able to interact. It is very helpful to have someone I can share everything with. And Pamela is that person for me.

My husband and I sought counseling due to several significant issues in our marriage. We were distraught and on the verge of divorce. Jeannie's approach to marriage counseling led us through a process that changed my perspective on my husband's actual needs and his to my needs. We didn't hear what the other was truly saying! I would highly recommend Jeannie to work with any couple from minor issues to major issues in their marriage.
