Hear from our clinicians

What is your go-to approach for child therapy?

Ian: My go-to approach for helping children is behavioral and cognitive behavioral, as well as using play therapy, especially for younger children (5-9 years old).

Harriet: My go-to approach for helping kids in child therapy is finding the child's interests while playing. I find that the best approach in targeted play therapy is twofold. It addresses the child's needs at their developmental and interest level and also makes therapy enjoyable and fun.

What tools do you teach in child therapy?

Ian: I teach behavior modification, structured and consistent time out (self-taken and authority initiated), socialization with appropriate and respectful language, as well as appropriate body language and eye contact.

Harriet: I want the child to be able to:

  • Identify their feelings.
  • Verbalize their needs in an assertive and non-aggressive manner.
  • Work together on identifying the child's thought processes.
  • Gain the communication skills needed to get their needs met.
  • Increase the child's self-esteem and self-worth by validating their strengths.
  • Build up the child's confidence, increasing their capability to learn and grow.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in child therapy?

Ian: To measure progress, I look at parental responses, sometimes using questionnaires, comparing baseline reports to the present results. I also use consultations and behavioral evaluations by teachers, coaches, and clergy.

Harriet: I know a child has made meaningful progress when they are better able to function at home, with other children, and in the school environment.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement child therapy?

Ian: To supplement therapy, clients should maintain structures established in therapy—i.e. enact what has behaviorally been taught in therapy to the parents—and maintain consistency by doing these structured exercises consistently.

Harriet: To supplement a child's time in therapy, it's important to validate the child's feelings.

What should someone do to prepare for starting child therapy?

Ian: Parents can tell the child that they are going to speak to someone (I am a “talking Doctor”) who speaks with children all the time to help them with their behaviors and feelings.

Harriet: To prepare for the child's therapy session, I encourage the child to feel comfortable with the therapy setting and with the clinician. Maybe the child needs reassurance that they can address their concerns in a safe, non-judgmental environment.

Starting Child/teen therapy

Need more help deciding?

Children and adolescents have life-changing experiences at this crucial stage of development: from moving to a new town and having to make new friends to being told that their parents are divorcing and adjusting to their time being split between Mom and Dad. Processing the many emotions that come with such changes is often difficult for anybody—but doing so is especially difficult for these young individuals who are still growing mentally and physically. The bottom line is that children and adolescents can benefit from working with a professional, such as when they endure big life changes.

The child therapists and psychologists at Thriveworks Boca Raton in Palm Beach, FL know just how hard this stage of life can be, and they want to do their part to help these young individuals. If your child or teenager is having trouble adjusting to or making friends in a new city, a child therapist can equip them with helpful tools for doing so; or, if your child is struggle as a result of a divorce in the family, a child therapist can help them to process the range of emotions they are likely experiencing. Whatever it is that your child is going through, a Thriveworks Boca Raton child therapist can offer help and guidance.

Pamela really helped me through some difficult issues; she helped me to understand the people in my life and how to interact with them and understand why they are how to understand them. With that knowledge, I am better able to interact. It is very helpful to have someone I can share everything with. And Pamela is that person for me.

My husband and I sought counseling due to several significant issues in our marriage. We were distraught and on the verge of divorce. Jeannie's approach to marriage counseling led us through a process that changed my perspective on my husband's actual needs and his to my needs. We didn't hear what the other was truly saying! I would highly recommend Jeannie to work with any couple from minor issues to major issues in their marriage.
