Get to know Amanda
Why did you decide to become a counselor?
I realized how much I enjoyed helping others after working for many years in customer service at a pharmacy. I enjoyed being a support to people when they needed it the most, I recognized my abilities to be patient and be empathetic to others' needs. Through facing certain life obstacles myself, I recognized my desire to give back and be there for people who needed help to overcome challenges in their lives.
What’s one thing you wish all clients knew?
I wish all clients knew that they already have the strengths within themselves to achieve so much in their lives, that can help transform their relationships, including social, interpersonal, romantic, and family, their personal growth, their careers, and beyond.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
The first session is about me getting to know the client and what is bringing them to therapy. Discussing the presenting issues will help us determine together what is the approach, which is specific to the client and their personal goals.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
I would like to work together with the client to address their priorities of participating in therapy and what goals can be set to help guide the sessions. I also remind clients that my intention is to be there for them as a support and listening ear, even if something changes from one session to the next. I like to have an open discussion for expressing concerns, needs, and expectations for therapy.
What’s one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
One thing that defines me is having a good sense of humor. I like to laugh at myself and joke around with friends and family in my personal life. I sometimes like to find humor in minor inconveniences to help me get through the day.
