What is your go-to approach for depression counseling?

Holly: My go-to approach for treating depression is taking a person-centered approach to allow the client to verbalize what is on their mind.

Catherine : I use mindfulness and CBT primarily when working with someone with depression. However, I will bring in other approaches as needed. CBT is also a good way to teach clients about the connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Mindfulness can help greatly in the moment as well.

What tools do you teach in depression counseling?

Holly: I teach the following tools in depression counseling:

  • Identification of feelings: A lot of times, people do not properly identify what they are feeling.
  • Expression of feelings: People need to learn ways of appropriately expressing their emotions.
  • Increase self-esteem: People need to add self-care into their day to replenish their sense of self.

Catherine : "I teach the following skills in depression therapy:

  • Deep breathing techniques
  • Grounding techniques
  • How to use CBT effectively
  • Stress management
  • Communication skills
  • Conflict resolution skills
  • Anger management
  • Coping skills for both short-term and long-term management
"

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling?

Holly: I know a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling when they feel motivated to do things that bring them joy, they are taking care of their daily needs, and they are being an active participant in their life.

Catherine : I know a client is making meaningful progress in depression therapy when they are consistently having lower stress and depression scores on the PQH-9. I also listen to what the client thinks is helping and making a difference.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement depression counseling?

Holly: Clients can supplement their time in depression counseling with journaling, which is a safe way to clear out their thoughts and feelings.

Catherine : I do not have a one-size-fits-all list for supplementing therapy. However, clients can make the most of their time in depression counseling by preparing what they would like to talk about beforehand and completing any requests that have been asked of them.

What should someone do to prepare for starting depression counseling?

Holly: To prepare for your first depression counseling session, you can make a list of things that you used to do that you no longer find pleasurable and what goals you want to work towards.

Catherine : To prepare for their first depression counseling session, a client can come open-mindedly and have an idea of what they feel is important to address.
