Roanoke Career Coaching and Counseling

Take a moment to think about your current career path. Where are you now? If you’re honest with yourself, could you say that you’re where you want to be professionally? If you like the vast majority of people, the answer is very likely a resounding “NO!” You may enjoy what you do or even make good money, but those things alone may not make you feel fulfilled. When you were a kid you were always asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Right? It’s a simple question, but…

Maybe “What do you want to be when you grow up?” is the wrong question.

That’s a weird statement, I admit. But think about it…Isn’t that question a bit too simple? A better one may be, “How do you want to live when you grow up?” Granted, that may be a bit overwhelming for a three or five, or even eight year old to really comprehend, let alone use to create a strategy to build their lives. But now that you’re “grown up” it may be time to start answering that question – How do you want to live? Starting with this question is kind of like approaching the other question (what do you want to be?) from the back door. If you know how you want to live – how much time you want to spend with family, what geographical area you’d like to reside in, what kind of home environment you’d like, the type of people you’d like to associate with, etc… Then you’ll be able to determine what professional path will best be suited to provide you those things. How much money do you need to accomplish those things? How much time? A Thriveworks Roanoke Career Coach or Counselor can help you start putting that puzzle together.
