Holly is amazing! She has helped me through one of the most difficult years of my life. I have recommended her to many of my older friends because it is difficult to find a therapist who understands how hard it is for people of our generation to talk about issues in our lives. I've also recommended Thriveworks to other people I know.

Holly Humphreys is a Registered Art Therapist (ATR) and a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) who works with individuals of all ages using art therapy as a means to attend to each individual’s specific needs. Holly has over 10 years of experience in providing art therapy to at-risk youth in juvenile detentions centers in Virginia. She also has 9 years of experience with providing behavior therapy to people who stutter.

Holly completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) at James Madison University and her Master of Science (MS) in Art Therapy at Eastern Virginia Medical School. She was born and raised in Roanoke, Virginia.

Holly is known for her honest, caring, empathetic, and creative approach to help individuals assess their current situation in life and assist them to make the necessary changes to better their lives. A person does not need to be good at art to benefit from art therapy. The final product is not important in art therapy, but the actual act of making the artwork is what is essential in the therapeutic process.

Get to know Holly

Why did you decide to become a counselor?

I always knew that I wanted to help people but I was told about Art Therapy when I was in High School and never looked back.

What’s one thing you wish all clients knew?

I wish all clients knew that Art Therapy is not for just children. Art Therapy is not about the final piece of artwork but more about the process of making art so you will never be judged on your artistic ability or lack there of.

What can clients expect in their first session with you?

The first session is mostly gathering basic information so that I may get to know you a little bit before we start unpacking what is really going on.

What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?

I want to set a person's mind at ease that therapy does not need to be difficult or intense for it to begin working.

What do you do for fun/on your time off?

I love reading and crafts but most of my time off is spent hanging out with my husband, son, and pup.
