What is your go-to approach for couples/marriage counseling?

“My go-to approach for helping people in couples/marriage counseling is Attachment Theory. I find the best benefit in Attachment Theory because it allows both partners to begin to understand not only themselves but each other at a deeper level. We all bring our own “baggage” to our relationships. When we can unpack the way we have been taught relationships should look with each other this helps with building empathy for one another. You finally understand why your partner shuts down at the first sign of conflict or why they feel afraid you are going to leave them.

What tools do you teach in couples/marriage counseling?

I teach the following tools in couples/marriage counseling:

  • Learning your attachment style
  • Healthy Communication
  • Learning how to set boundaries
  • How to fight fair

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in couples/marriage counseling?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in couples/marriage counseling when they are faced with a similar challenge that they have had before coming to counseling and respond differently. When they can recognize the pattern, pause, listen to their partner and both come up with a resolution together, we know we are making some serious progress!

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement couples/marriage counseling?

Clients can supplement their time in couples/marriage counseling with genuinely connecting. Yes, that means putting the phone down, turning off the tv, sitting down, actually looking at one another, and having a conversation about something. It is about prioritizing your relationship. Life is crazy, that to do list is always there. Your time together may not be.

What should someone do to prepare for starting couples/marriage counseling?

To prepare for your first couples/marriage counseling session, you can write down the challenges you face that are coming up often. Arguments that seem to be recurring. Also write down what you want out of therapy and how you would like your ideal relationship to look. What do you need from your partner (use examples).

Starting Couples therapy

What is couples therapy?

Thriveworks Couples therapy helps couples work through their specific relationship issues. It is led by licensed professionals — often licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) — who are experts in their field and best-equipped to help couples. Some examples of common focuses within couples therapy include:

  • Jealousy
  • Trust issues
  • Infidelity
  • Opposing values
  • Different visions for the future
  • Disagreements in parenting
  • Lack of trust
  • Financial distress
  • Sex issues

How does couples therapy work?

Couples therapy works by helping couples identify and better navigate their unique challenges. Following an initial assessment of the couple in terms of strengths and needs, the therapist would then discuss their therapeutic goals and any possible approaches or ways of working together as therapist and couple.
Couples attend sessions together, whether they meet in person or by video. In addition to regular couples therapy sessions, each partner may also be asked to attend a few individual sessions to supplement their progress. This will allow their counselor to get to know each individual better, assess each of their personal needs, and develop the very best treatment plan moving forward.

Is couples therapy conducted in person or online?

Couples therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and via Online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you and your partner.

How long does couples therapy last?

On average, couples attend couples therapy for 12 weeks. However, couples therapy may last longer or shorter, dependent on the couples’ needs, the challenges they’d like to work through, and the pace of their progress.

Couples Counseling and Therapy in Blacksburg, VA

The professionals at Thriveworks Counseling Blacksburg, VA have helped many couples recognize and resolve conflicts and improve their relationship. Through counseling, you can make thoughtful decisions about rebuilding and strengthening your relationship or going your separate ways.

Reach out today to get started.

Common Relationship Issues

All relationships go through an occasional rough patch. Some common issues that couples experience include:

  • money struggles or disagreements
  • equality in the relationship
  • sexual problems
  • drifting apart
  • lack of trust
  • poor communication
  • fear of commitment
  • children/parenting disagreements

It is difficult, if not impossible, for people to see themselves or their relationships completely objectively. People often see what their partner is doing and its effects on the relationship. But it’s hard to have evaluate their own actions. Instead of pointing fingers, there is a better way to handle conflict within a committed relationship. Most couples struggling within their marriage or committed relationship will benefit from the input of a skilled, experienced, and unbiased third party – a couples counselor.

How Couples Counseling Can Help

Relationship counseling can help couples in all types of intimate relationships, regardless of sexual orientation or marriage status. Even in a mostly healthy relationship, couples counseling may strengthen the partnership and give each individual a better understanding of the other. The couple can gain a deeper understanding of their relationship, of each other and how best to address and/or accept their differences.

With the help of your Thriveworks Blacksburg relationship therapist, you’ll learn skills to solidify your relationship, such as developing more open communication, constructive problem-solving, how to discuss differences in a reasonable rational manner, and much more.

Should You Seek Couples Counseling?

You may be wondering if the things you’re experiencing are normal and you’re just over-reacting or worrying too much. But if any issue is impacting your relationship, it is definitely a good idea for you to consider couples counseling. Do any of these issues describe what you’re experiencing currently in your relationship?

  • Has your communication as a couple become mostly negative, or near non-existent?
  • Do you feel that your only reason for remaining in the relationship is for the sake of the children?
  • Does the prospect of having an affair seem less objectionable, perhaps even justified, lately?
  • Has resentment or bitterness become more and more present in the relationship?
  • Does divorce or separation seem like the only solution?
  • Are you, or is your partner, acting out their negative feelings?

If so, couples therapy may be the right next step. We understand that you may be hurting, angry, or scared. Emotions run high when it comes to a significant other, but our counselors are ready to guide your relationship toward the right track. Sometimes the hardest part is admitting that the relationship needs help. But most find the experience to be insightful and empowering.

So nice, reassuring, helpful for what I needed. Explained everything very well. I feel I don’t have a bunch of questions I should have asked.

The waiting room was so inviting and the counselor had recognized me that made me feel very comfortable. I was tense from the unknown of therapy and it was so good to be "humanized."
