What is your go-to approach for anxiety therapy?

My go-to approach for treating anxiety is cognitive behavioral therapy, bibliotherapies, and some expressive arts (when appropriate). I prefer to use both CBT and bibliotherapies because both can tackle long-held beliefs that are perpetuating anxious symptoms.

What tools do you teach in anxiety therapy?

I teach the following tools in individual therapy:

  • CBT thought records: A journaling exercise that allows the individual to identify and dissect unhelpful thoughts to retrain the thought process for long-term healing.
  • Practical solutions: Looking at real-world problems through structured problem-solving.
  • Self-compassion: Learning to treat yourself with love and support, treating yourself as your own best friend.
  • Mindfulness: The practice of being intentional with your attention and awareness.
  • Coping skills education: Providing education about the variety of coping skill and their function in long-term healing.
  • Expressive arts (not specifically art therapy): Utilizes art mediums to convey emotions or thoughts when words become hard to find.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in anxiety therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in anxiety therapy when they report an overall drop in the frequency of having to address anxiety symptoms and have an increase in curiosity surrounding their anxiety, asking themselves, “What can I learn from this?” or “What is my anxiety trying to tell me?”

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement anxiety therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in anxiety therapy with a regular practice of self-love/self-care and by cultivating an openness/curiosity toward their mental wellness.

What should someone do to prepare for starting anxiety therapy?

To prepare for your first anxiety therapy session, you can engage in a relaxation practice that is helpful, attend to basic needs (hunger and hydration), make a list of questions or concerns (if that is helpful), and tell yourself that counseling is meant to be helpful and it is encouraged that you advocate for your needs.

Starting Anxiety therapy

What is anxiety therapy?

Anxiety therapy helps people better understand and manage their anxiety. Anxiety therapists at Thriveworks in Blacksburg, VA can develop a treatment plan that will help you better manage your day-to-day anxiety or your anxiety disorder.

How does anxiety therapy work?

Anxiety therapy involves talking to a therapist about symptoms, potential causes, and more. Thriveworks Blacksburg therapists will then work with you to determine where your anxiety might stem from and teach you effective coping mechanisms.

How to deal with anxiety?

One of the best ways to deal with anxiety is to learn about your own anxiety: your symptoms, what triggers it, and what coping mechanisms have been effective in the past. When you learn what your anxiety is tied to, it can help you be mindful of what's really happening as well as prevent and mitigate symptoms by processing and working through the issue in therapy. Other strategies that have been shown to help manage anxiety are meditation, challenging anxious thoughts, exercising, and journaling.

Symptoms of anxiety

Common symptoms of anxiety include:

  • Sense of impending danger
  • Nervousness/restlessness
  • Trouble focusing
  • Excessive sweating
  • Shaking
  • Headaches
  • Stomach issues
  • Fatigue
  • Panic attacks
  • Increased heart rate

What is the best therapy for anxiety?

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can be incredibly effective in treating anxiety and anxiety disorders. Other effective techniques include exposure therapy, Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and EMDR therapy.

Is anxiety therapy conducted in person or online?

Anxiety therapy is conducted both in person and online, depending on the individual's preferences and their therapist's availability. We suggest choosing the option that best suits your needs.

How long does anxiety therapy last?

On average, people can tend to attend 15 to 20 session of anxiety therapy (five or more months). However, this number is heavily dependent on the type of anxiety that's being treated and its severity, with many choosing to attend anxiety therapy for a longer period of time to ensure its effectiveness long-term.

Is therapy worth it for anxiety?

Yes, it is worth going to therapy for anxiety. If you are struggling with regular anxious thoughts and feelings that are affecting your day-to-day life or you suspect that you have an anxiety disorder, you should seek expert anxiety help.

Anxiety Counseling – Anxiety Therapy and Counselors in Blacksburg, VA

Surprisingly, anxiety itself is “hardwired” into our brains. It is part of our fight-or-flight response, warning us to act quickly at the threat, or perceived threat, of danger. It’s normal to feel anxious in response to uncertainty, trouble/danger, feeling unprepared, etc.

BUT, when common everyday events cause severe and persistent anxiety or even panic that interferes with everyday life, you may have an anxiety disorder. Anxiety can rob us of emotional and physical well-being.

Do I Have an Anxiety Disorder?

If your anxiety is . . .

  • persistent
  • uncontrollable or overwhelming
  • causing an excessive, irrational dread of everyday situations
  • interfering with your daily activities
    • . . . then you may have an anxiety disorder.

Compare these descriptions of “normal” anxiety, and anxiety disorder:

  • Normal Anxiety: Occasionally worrying about circumstantial events, such as an exam or breakup; may leave you feeling upset, but you soon bounce back.
  • Anxiety Disorder: Constant, chronic, and unfounded worry causing significant distress, so much so that it disturbs your social life, and interferes with classes or work.
  • Normal Anxiety: Embarrassment or self-consciousness in an uncomfortable social situation.
  • Anxiety Disorder: Avoidance of common social situations for fear of being judged, embarrassed, or humiliated.
  • Normal Anxiety: Occasional nerves or jitters; dizziness or sweating over an exam, presentation, or other important event.
  • Anxiety Disorder: Repeated, random panic attacks or persistent worry and anticipation of another panic attack and feelings of terror or impending doom.
  • Normal Anxiety: Rational fear of a threatening object, place, or situation.
  • Anxiety Disorder: Irrational, unrealistic fear or avoidance of an object, place, or situation that poses little or no threat of danger.
  • Normal Anxiety: Wanting to feel confident that you are healthy and living in a safe, hazard-free environment.
  • Anxiety Disorder: Performing uncontrollable, repetitive actions, such as washing your hands repeatedly or checking things over and over.
  • Normal Anxiety: Anxiety, sadness, or difficulty sleeping immediately following a traumatic event.
  • Anxiety Disorder: Ongoing and recurring nightmares, flashbacks, or emotional numbing relating to a traumatic event in your life that occurred several months or years ago.

I Think I May Have an Anxiety Disorder and I’m Scared

Anxiety disorders are real. They are serious medical conditions. And they are treatable. Anxiety disorders are the most common yet pervasive mental/emotional disorders in the United States.
Anxiety disorders involve extreme fear or worry, and include (but are not limited to) such conditions as generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorders/panic attacks, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and social anxiety disorder. Some people experience anxiety while also suffering from depression.

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental conditions affecting children and adults. Over 40 million American adults suffer from anxiety disorders, but sadly, only about one-third of those receive treatment, even though these disorders are highly treatable.

At Thriveworks Blacksburg Anxiety Counseling, we find that statistic appalling, and unacceptable. We have highly skilled counselors who are experts in anxiety counseling, and they want to help YOU manage your anxiety and overcome the symptoms that may be making your life difficult. You don’t have to suffer. You’re not alone. Our therapists are sympathetic, supportive, understanding, and have numerous methods and approaches to treating your anxiety.

Overcoming an Anxiety Disorder

The struggle with anxiety usually develops slowly, and can begin at any age. “Worry” can even cause physical symptoms like muscle tension, headaches, exhaustion, rapid/irregular heartbeat, and even swallowing or breathing difficulty. At its worst, anxiety disorders can even contribute to or exacerbate serious health issues such as heart disease, gastrointestinal issues, and chronic respiratory issues.

Further, anxiety can become so overwhelming that it causes additional problems in every area of our lives. It can be debilitating. If you feel like constant feelings of anxiety are impacting your life and you just can’t handle it on your own, call Thriveworks Blacksburg for Anxiety Counseling.
