Get to know April
Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
People need help and I wanted to help them.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
Change takes time. As much as I love solution focused modalities, most problems are not so easily managed. Seeing the small changes quickly can be hugely encouraging to people, but they often aren’t the end goal and lasting change takes practice and time.
What inspires you?
The thing that inspires me most is helping people find a path to healing that is tailored to them. Healing can be a difficult journey for many people, but it is my passion to assist people in making progress towards the future they want for themselves.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
The first session with a client would be a time to get to know one another, and gain an understanding of how I can help, and treatment goals for moving forward. This first meeting is the foundation of the therapeutic relationship, and my office is a judgment free zone, people heal best when they are able to be themselves, own their pasts, and move forward in a positive direction. This looks differently for different people and what therapeutic methods or techniques (or combination) will help the most is dependent on the clients’ needs.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
I would want to discover what my client hopes to gain from counseling and work on a plan to get there. During the first session treatment goals will be discussed and a treatment plan formulated. It should be noted that treatment plans are not carved in stone and may change over time if the client’s needs change.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first session?
I meet clients where they are in their life journey. Clients need to know that I am a Catholic Christian. I say this because I am able to offer faith-based services that are researched and effective (for both Catholic and Protestant clients). This would be something that I would like the client to request if this is what they are seeking. Because this is a secular service in the way it is being offered clients may not know this about me unless they ask or specifically request faith-based services.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I enjoy gaming with my family and playing with my cats and dog.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
My relationship with Christ and desire to help others.
