About Provider

About Patricia

Patricia "Tricia" McCarty is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who enjoys helping people work through life transitions, addiction, grief/loss, chronic illness/pain, anxiety, depression, stress, and low self-esteem. Tricia uses a humanistic approach and a variety of therapeutic modalities, including cognitive-behavioral, mindfulness-based, strength-based, narrative, acceptance and commitment, expressive art as therapy, and positive psychotherapy.

Tricia completed her Master of Social Work at Virginia Commonwealth University. She will actively listen, help you gain perspective, explore with you what is keeping you from becoming the best version of yourself, and make a plan that will empower you to reach your goals.

“In any given moment we have two options: to step forward into growth or to step back into safety” (Abraham Maslow). Sometimes what feels safe, comfortable, and familiar, is actually unhealthy; change can be hard and the unknown scary. Do you feel stuck, repeating toxic patterns or negative thinking? Have life events or stress become overwhelming or seem unmanageable? Maybe you just need a supportive space to talk about what you’re going through and how you are feeling.

Get to know Patricia

Why did you decide to become a counselor?

I became a counselor so that I could help people in a meaningful way.

What types of clients do you work with best?

open-minded, humble people who understand the value of therapy and are willing to collaborate with me to meet treatment goals.

What type of clients are you most excited to work with?

Those who believe that positive change can occur in their own lives with guidance and hard work.

What’s one thing you wish all clients knew?

That the therapeutic process takes time.

Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?

I love being an outpatient therapist, but am not interested in the admin and business aspects of owning an individual practice.

What inspires you?

Witnessing resilience.

What can clients expect in their first session with you?

This is my chance to hear your story...I like to hear the client's perspective of the challenges they are facing and to gather a thorough background assessment.

What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?

We will identify at least one long-term goal of therapy and one small goal to accomplish before our next session.

What do you do for fun/on your time off?

Paint, play music, pilates, barre, and hot yoga.

What’s one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?

I developed discipline through many years of playing music and serving an enlistment in the Marine Corps.
