How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in child therapy?

Michelle Nirenberg
Michelle Nirenberg

Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)

I know a client is making meaningful progress in child therapy when they are able to identify triggers associated with their symptoms and they can use the different coping skills as if they are second nature and there are positive results.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement online therapy?

Charles Graff
Charles Graff

Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)

Clients can supplement their time in online therapy by journaling their thoughts on topics and emotions related to the sessions throughout the week in an effort to be more aware of the changes from day to day and to have a much more thorough conversation in the following session.

What should someone do to prepare for starting anxiety therapy?

Chedva Berger
Chedva Berger

Licensed Social Worker (LSW)

To prepare for your first anxiety therapy session, you can just come in with an open mind, curiosity, and a desire to learn and heal.

What is your go-to approach for depression counseling?

Chedva Berger
Chedva Berger

Licensed Social Worker (LSW)

My preferred approach for treating depression is a blend of emotion regulation and mindfulness skills building, identifying maladaptive self-beliefs, parts work, and trauma processing. I find this method particularly effective because it allows me to tailor treatment to suit the unique needs and circumstances of each client. This comprehensive strategy supports a holistic healing journey, encompassing not just the cognitive aspects of depression but also its emotional, somatic, and relational dimensions. Through integrative therapy, clients experience significant improvement in their depressive symptoms and overall well-being, leading to a more fulfilling life.

What tools do you teach in cognitive behavioral therapy?

Charles Graff
Charles Graff

Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)

I teach the following tools in cognitive behavioral therapy:
  • Cognitive reframing: helping clients to see different situations, interactions, and emotions from a different, more productive point of view
  • Journaling: keeping track of thoughts about experiences throughout the week between sessions
  • De-catastrophizing: countering worst-case scenario thinking with logical, rational lines of questioning to put those thoughts into perspective
  • Progressive relaxation strategies: deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation
  • And many other techniques.
