Starting Depression counseling

What can counseling do for those who suffer with depression?

Depression counseling can help those with major depression, minor depression, postpartum depression, persistent depressive disorder, and more. The providers at Thriveworks in Toms River, NJ will develop a unique treatment plan based on your specific experience, needs, and goals.

Is it worth going to therapy for depression?

It is absolutely worth going to therapy for depression — depression counseling helps people better manage their symptoms and get back to living happier lives again.

How does depression counseling work?

Depression counseling works by helping people pinpoint life problems, distorted thought patterns, and other causes of their depression, then process and work through them in order to mitigate the negative effects those factors have on their lives.

Signs of depression

Common signs of depression include:

  • Consistent low mood
  • Fatigue
  • Irritability
  • Oversleeping or difficulty sleeping
  • Changes in diet (eating much more or less)
  • Withdrawal and isolation
  • Feelings of guilt or worthlessness
  • Feelings of hopelessness
  • Loss of interest in previous hobbies or activities
  • Excessive substance use

Is depression counseling conducted in person or online?

Thriveworks depression counseling in Toms River, NJ is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How often should you have therapy for depression?

Depression counseling can last for a few weeks, months, or longer, dependent on the severity of one's depression as well as their needs and preferences.

How much does depression counseling cost?

At Thriveworks, we take most major forms of insurance, which means that many of our clients only pay a $0-$50 co-pay per session. However, there are also self-pay options that sit around $200 per session, depending on the service and location, for those who are out-of-network.

Need more help deciding?

We all have those days where getting out of bed feels impossible, the workday is never-ending, and coming home to your bed doesn’t refill your spirit.

Sometimes, that one day stretches into a few days. Sometimes, it becomes weeks. And sometimes, it becomes depression.

It feels like everyone else is moving on with their lives while I am stuck here, in this hole that I can’t climb out of.”

What Does Depression Feel Like?

No one case of depression is the same, just like no one person is the same, or how no one counseling session will be the same. Thriveworks Toms River prides we on creating unique, individualized therapeutic plans that takes into consideration your current situation, goals, personality, and other things that are important to you. There is so much that goes into who you are- depression isn’t even a small slice of the pie. Let’s dig out those pieces of you that you love! Counseling isn’t about pointing out the bad, it’s about letting the good shine.

The good news about depression is that while it is quite common, it is also very treatable. Of the 264 million people that suffer from depression world-wide, the majority will get better. Their futures are free from depression, and yours can too!

The first step is to always acknowledge your problem, and then reach out to a professional. A few common symptoms of depression are:

  • Feeling worthless
  • Having no energy (may be called “lazy”)
  • A loss of interest in things that used to bring you joy
  • Mental fog (not thinking straight)
  • Abnormal sleeping patterns (sleeping too much or too little)
  • Unordinary eating habits (eating too much or too little)
  • Irritability
  • Changes in sex drive
  • Feeling down or sad
  • Suicidal thoughts or behavior

Depression has multiple layers. It can seep into your social life, career, physical health, relationships, and so much more. It is chains that you don’t deserve to carry. Thriveworks Toms River is here with professional counseling, so you don’t have to.

What Does Counseling for Depression Look Like?

Therapy is not you are sitting on a couch and being analyzed. It’s not a counselor telling you what to do. It’s a partnership between counselor and client and an understanding that depression must go.

When it comes to treating depression, Thriveworks Toms River has many tools that we can use to get you to where you want to be. For example, we might talk about:

  • The root cause of your depression (if it was brought on by an event)
  • Coping strategies
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (changing negative thoughts and detrimental behaviors)
  • How to rewire the way you think about yourself
  • Possible changes to your environment and routine to better your mental health. Things like exercise, healthy eating and good sleep are huge in winning the battle with depression.
  • Much more!

Everyone’s experience with depression is different, so everyone’s experience with counseling should be different too! At Thriveworks Toms River, you are valued just for being you. Our counselors are trained to handle whatever you bring to the table- big or small. While we can’t magically wish your struggles away, we can walk with you and teach you how to help yourself.

Depression doesn’t have to be in your future. When you’re ready, Thriveworks Toms River is here to help you take back control and live the life you deserve.

My therapist is Lesley Petersen and I have been a patient of hers for about four months now. She has been helping me through a stressful situation that I have been going through. I would recommend her because she is easy to talk to and non-judgmental.

awfully. Goes on vacation for two weeks. Double books me. Calls me one minute before our scheduled meeting time. Says the other person is inside the office and cannot see me. says to me I will call me that night and then says to me via a text message that I will call in the morning. Calls me at 11:am. We have our session where she keeps adding restrictions on me and says "it's nothing personal". Speaks very low that I cannot hear.Tells me she sees 50 people weekly and cannot talk on the phone.

Thriveworks is great and really cares for clients, I fully recommend them! And I honestly cannot say enough good things about Sharon Ryan. I never feel wrong, crazy, or judged while speaking with her. She is so comforting and provides excellent, accurate insights. I really appreciate her interest and understanding as well as her flexibility for appointments. I’ve been struggling with losing interest in hobbies that I once loved. With Sharon’s help, I’ve developed new interests I’ve always wanted to try and expanded my horizons. Thank you so much, truly, from the bottom of my heart!

I recommend checking out Thriveworks to find a mental health care provider that can suit your needs. The owners are sweet, genuine people who make it their mission to help others by connecting therapists and those who want a little guidance. Your mental health is important (especially these days) and you don't need to being in a crisis to see a therapist! In fact, its better to seek out a therapist before you can't cope on your own.
