Starting Life transitions counseling

What is life transition therapy?

At Thriveworks, Life transitions counseling is a specialized form of therapy that focuses on helping individuals navigate major life changes, adjustments, and transitions. The specific approach and techniques used in this type of therapy can vary depending on the individual's needs and the nature of the transition. Life transitions counseling is designed to provide support, coping strategies, and a safe space for individuals to explore and process their experiences.

How does life transition counseling work?

Life transitions counseling starts with an initial assessment where the therapist gathers information about your specific transition, emotional state, concerns, and goals. In this supportive and non-judgmental space, you can process the myriad of emotions that often accompany life transitions, including stress, anxiety, and grief. The counseling process also focuses on helping you to adapt to changing circumstances, set new goals, make informed decisions, maintain healthy relationships, explore evolving identities, and access ongoing support throughout the transition.

Why are life transitions so hard?

Life transitions are difficult because they alter our sense of what is “normal”, affecting our relationships, routines, work life, home environement, health, and much more.

How can I make my life transitions easier?

The best way to make your life transitions easier is to seek the assistance of a counselor who can offer you Life transitions counseling to help address and adapt to the changes you are experiencing.

Is life transition counseling conducted in person or online?

Life transitions counseling at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and via Online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does life transition counseling last?

The length of life transitions counseling can differ widely, depending on an individual's specific needs and the changes happening in their life. Typically, this counseling is short-term, spanning several sessions over a few weeks or months. The exact number of sessions and how long it takes are decided in consultation with the counselor, considering how the individual is progressing and what they want to achieve.

Need more help deciding?

Our lives are always changing. From the day-to-day meal plan or conversations to the life-altering events, change is all around us. Some change is planned, coordinated, and exciting. Others come out of nowhere and can seem to blow our life plan off course. Some change is good, healthy, and enriching. Others might feel like a trial you’re forced to get through.

Planned or spontaneous, good or bad, life transitions are terrifying. They can be confusing, stressful, and exhausting too. It’s a lot of weight to carry all on your own. That is why Toms River Life Transition Coaches at Thriveworks are here to carry some of the load and help you settle into your new life healthier and happier than before.

Why Go to a Counselor for Life Transitions?

Counseling is a tool that you can use to build a life you are excited about. One that is healthy, enriching, and fulfilling. There is nothing weak about reaching out to a counselor! Maybe you know someone who went through what you’re going through all on their own and came out totally fine. Maybe there is an external or internal pressure to do this thing on your own. Maybe you don’t think that your situation warrants seeing a counselor.

Here’s the truth: you aren’t some other person. You are you and you deserve the best life possible. That internal and external pressure is most likely a result of society telling you that support is weakness, which is a lie. There is never a problem too big or too small that should stop someone from seeing a counselor, and as soon as you’re ready to take that step, call us at 732-852-4977.

Admitting that you could use help and taking that step is a sign of taking responsibility for your happiness and health and doing what is necessary to get there. That sounds like strength to us!

Still, the Toms River counselors understand that getting counseling is not an easy decision. To help you with your decision, here are some symptoms that the stress of your life transition is getting determinant to the health and happiness of yourself and those around you:

  • Unusually high stress levels that you feel like you can’t cope with
  • A sense of dread that follows you around
  • Anxiety
  • Changes in eating or sleeping behavior
  • Trouble focusing
  • More problems with friends and family than normal
  • Angry outbursts
  • Difficulty making and attaining goals
  • A sense of displacement, like you know there’s more out there for you
  • Unsure of what the future might hold and being unwilling or unable to take the next step.
  • Constant doubt that you’re on the right path
  • Obsessing over details
  • Unhealthy coping mechanisms like drinking or self-harm

This list is far from exhaustive. They all really get at one question: is where you are right now where you want to be? If the answer is no in any regard- mentally, emotionally, physically, financially- then a Toms River Life Coach can help.

What Is Life Transition Counseling?

“Life Transition Counseling” Or “Life Coaching” is a broad counseling subject on purpose. At Toms River counseling we value you as an individual with your own unique situation, goals, and setbacks. We strive to be client-centered and judgment-free at all times.

This means that we encourage you to bring any problem, question, or concern to a counseling session. We will unpack each with the same empathy and professional skill.

Life coaching’s goal is to simply transition you to a new stage of life that leaves you with the tools to create a healthier, happier life. It’s easy to lose sight of what’s important, who you are, your main goals, and your values when you are in the middle of a big change. Toms River Life Transition Coaching is here to shine some light on the issues at hand and help you through each stage.

A few examples of what we might talk about in a life transitions session include:

  • The loss or addition of a family member
  • A major move
  • A big career shifts
  • A change in location
  • Shift in beliefs
  • The diagnosis of a chronic illness
  • Recovering from a hurt relationship
  • Car crash or property wreckage

Again, these are only a few of the possible things that can be discussed with a Toms River counselor. And, whatever brought you to counseling doesn’t have to stay the main point of discussion! Often people come in with one idea of how counseling will go and will come back with a completely new subject to work through. That is great! That is what we are here for.

So whatever stage of life you are in, Thriveworks Counseling in Toms River welcomes you. When you are ready to take that next step, give us a call at 732-852-4977.

My therapist is Lesley Petersen and I have been a patient of hers for about four months now. She has been helping me through a stressful situation that I have been going through. I would recommend her because she is easy to talk to and non-judgmental.

awfully. Goes on vacation for two weeks. Double books me. Calls me one minute before our scheduled meeting time. Says the other person is inside the office and cannot see me. says to me I will call me that night and then says to me via a text message that I will call in the morning. Calls me at 11:am. We have our session where she keeps adding restrictions on me and says "it's nothing personal". Speaks very low that I cannot hear.Tells me she sees 50 people weekly and cannot talk on the phone.

Thriveworks is great and really cares for clients, I fully recommend them! And I honestly cannot say enough good things about Sharon Ryan. I never feel wrong, crazy, or judged while speaking with her. She is so comforting and provides excellent, accurate insights. I really appreciate her interest and understanding as well as her flexibility for appointments. I’ve been struggling with losing interest in hobbies that I once loved. With Sharon’s help, I’ve developed new interests I’ve always wanted to try and expanded my horizons. Thank you so much, truly, from the bottom of my heart!

I recommend checking out Thriveworks to find a mental health care provider that can suit your needs. The owners are sweet, genuine people who make it their mission to help others by connecting therapists and those who want a little guidance. Your mental health is important (especially these days) and you don't need to being in a crisis to see a therapist! In fact, its better to seek out a therapist before you can't cope on your own.
