Starting Depression counseling

What can counseling do for those who suffer with depression?

Depression counseling can help those with major depression, minor depression, postpartum depression, persistent depressive disorder, and more. The providers at Thriveworks in Tampa, FL will develop a unique treatment plan based on your specific experience, needs, and goals.

Is it worth going to therapy for depression?

It is absolutely worth going to therapy for depression — depression counseling helps people better manage their symptoms and get back to living happier lives again.

How does depression counseling work?

Depression counseling works by helping people pinpoint life problems, distorted thought patterns, and other causes of their depression, then process and work through them in order to mitigate the negative effects those factors have on their lives.

Signs of depression

Common signs of depression include:

  • Consistent low mood
  • Fatigue
  • Irritability
  • Oversleeping or difficulty sleeping
  • Changes in diet (eating much more or less)
  • Withdrawal and isolation
  • Feelings of guilt or worthlessness
  • Feelings of hopelessness
  • Loss of interest in previous hobbies or activities
  • Excessive substance use

Is depression counseling conducted in person or online?

Thriveworks depression counseling in Tampa, FL is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How often should you have therapy for depression?

Depression counseling can last for a few weeks, months, or longer, dependent on the severity of one’s depression as well as their needs and preferences.

How much does depression counseling cost?

At Thriveworks, we take most major forms of insurance, which means that many of our clients only pay a $0-$50 co-pay per session. However, there are also self-pay options that sit around $200 per session, depending on the service and location, for those who are out-of-network.

Need more help deciding?

Hopeless. Unmotivated. Uninterested. Indifferent. Disconnected. Exhausted. These are a few of the many harmful feelings that often come with depression. Depression is a relentless illness, one that might appear during a particularly tough time in your life or, on the other hand, just when everything seemed to be looking up. Depression can be described as a sense of despair that makes living difficult and painful.

If a beloved friend or family member were experiencing this, would you want them to suffer in silence? The unequivocal answer is no. You’d want them to disclose these feelings to you and perhaps a professional, too. The reality is that while we can do our best to help and support our loved ones who feel depressed, truly healing and recovering from depression as well as other mental illnesses often takes a mental health professional’s intervention.

You are the one thing in this world, above all other things, that you must never give up on. When I was in middle school, I was struggling with severe anxiety and depression, and the help and support I received from my family and a therapist saved my life. Asking for help is the first step. –Lili Rhinehart

Depression therapy is designed to help people manage their depression, even when it feels unmanageable. The depression therapists at Thriveworks Tampa, FL know that you might feel hopeless, but we also know that therapy, as well as medication, self-care, and other interventions, can help you get back to living the life you know and love. If you feel depressed, consider working with one of our depression therapists or counselors. It’s pertinent that you talk to someone and get help as soon as possible. We’d be honored to provide you with this help. Just call our office to schedule an appointment.

What Is It Like to Be Depressed?

We briefly detailed above what it can feel like to be depressed. But depression isn’t just about the emotional and mental effects. Depression often takes a toll on your physical health too: it can make sleeping difficult; it can lead to changes in appetite and weight; it can cause stomach pain; and it can come with other physical effects, too. Here is a more comprehensive list of common depression symptoms, both the mental and the physical:

  • A persistent feeling of sadness or despair
  • Loss of interest
  • Sleep disturbances, such as insomnia
  • Changes in appetite and/or weight
  • Low self-esteem
  • Loss of concentration
  • Irritability
  • Social isolation
  • Fatigue
  • Suicidal thoughts or ideation

You might experience some of these symptoms but not others, as depression can vary in presentation and severity from person to person. That said, if you experience the first two symptoms on this list as well as several others, you might be depressed. And therefore, it’s important that you talk to a mental health professional who can help you figure out how to feel and get better!

How Can a Depression Therapist at Thriveworks Tampa Counseling Help?

Our depression therapists are trained and experienced in helping individuals who exhibit symptoms of depression. They have worked with those with mild depression and those with major depression. They’ve helped people with bipolar disorder, seasonal affective disorder, and other forms of depression, too. They are uniquely qualified to help a range of individuals, regardless of the specific symptoms you might be experiencing.

Now, that’s not to say that your specific symptoms aren’t important or don’t matter. In fact, your depression therapist will want to know about everything you are experiencing, so that they can design a treatment plan that will help you the most effectively. Not only do they have the skills, the training, and the experience that we mentioned above, but they truly care about every single one of their clients and are determined to help you find healing.
