As one who was diagnosed with ADHD, I have empathetic understanding and patience with the neurodivergent population that I draw from to find the best creative solutions for my clients.
I am Jessica Hutchison, a licensed professional counselor associate (LPC-A) with almost two years of professional experience. I have worked mainly with children ages 4 to 18, providing family therapy and parenting sessions, though I am trained to work with all ages. My clients have faced ADHD, autism, depression, anxiety, PTSD, grief, substance abuse, ODD, suicidal ideation, self-harm, stress-related disorders, and mood disorders — wanting to manage symptoms, learn to love themselves, become more successful, or simply "not be sad anymore." I want to help all of my clients become the best and happiest versions of themselves.
The main techniques I have used with my clients are play therapy, CBT, DBT, solution-focused therapy, client-centered therapy, mindfulness training, psychoeducation, reflective listening, and goal setting. I believe in clear, honest, open communication between therapist and client to help build a healthy and trusting rapport.
Sometimes the world can seem like too much. If you have ever felt struggling, unhappy, or not where you want to be, come talk to someone who has struggled and can teach you how to manage. I will help you discover underlying issues and learn to love yourself again. Please come see me, Jessica Hutchison, your fellow neurodivergent who understands the struggle.

There are several different approaches to family therapy, such as narrative therapy, systemic therapy, and structural therapy. The specific family needs will dictate what approach the therapist may find most helpful.
Some of the tools that can be taught in family therapy are setting healthy boundaries, learning to regulate emotions, and self-awareness.
Success can be measured by achieving the specific goals the client identified at the start of therapy.
Clients are often encouraged to practice skills they have been learning in therapy.
The family should identify what they need support with in therapy and seek a therapist they feel will have the approach they are looking for.
Family therapy helps families resolve conflicts and strengthen their relationships. It is led by qualified mental health professionals like psychologists, licensed professional counselors (LPCs), and licensed clinical social workers (LCSWs) who have extensive training in family dynamics and group communication.
Thriveworks family therapists in Mt Pleasant, SC usually begin by asking what everyone’s goals are for family counseling. Family members may need help with very specific issues or with general relationship functioning. But there are three main purposes in family counseling: to educate, to counsel, and to strengthen. Thriveworks also offers online family therapy and in-person services, so you may all meet in an office together or join a video call from your home depending on everyone’s location and availability.
The most effective form of Family therapy will often depend on the family itself, as there are many types of family therapy for therapists to use as they see fit in order to best meet the needs of their clients. However, one of the most commonly used types of family therapy is structural family therapy (SFT). SFT focuses specifically on family dynamics and interactions, looking at how they shape the relationships and structure present in the family. It can be effectively used to treat a variety of concerns.
This answer often looks different to each family that starts family therapy. However, some signs that your family might need to consider family counseling include frequent fights or misunderstandings, constant tension, experiencing loss, behavioral issues, marital issues, divorce, and blended family issues, among others.
In family therapy, therapists will often start by asking questions and assessing individual and family dynamics. From there, they may employ therapeutic techniques such as structured family therapy, CBT, strategic family therapy, and more depending on the present concerns and conflicts. From there, a therapist will work to open lines of communication between family members and facilitate emotional healing and growth.
Family therapy can be incredibly successful, with some studies reporting a success rate of almost 90% for improving participants’ emotional and mental health, and around 66% for improving their physical health.
Thriveworks therapists in Mt Pleasant, SC offer both online family therapy and in-person family therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.
Family therapy is usually short term and solution-focused, with most families accomplishing their goals in 12 sessions or fewer. However, it can also last for longer if the probles at hand are more complex — and that’s okay, too.
Even families with a strong foundation and healthy habits can experience disruption, hardship, and upheaval, resulting in conflict and turmoil. Often, children have issues that their parents struggle to manage, and parents, in turn, fight with their kids. How they got to this place can be baffling to parents, and they wonder what happened to the kind, loving kids they know they are raising. This is the time to talk to a trained and licensed family therapist who can help work through family issues and pave a path forward.
If you’d like to talk to a family therapist about how we can help you work through the issues you’re having, call us to schedule an appointment. Our phone number is 843-606-6223.
