About Susan

Susan Jillson is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) who has 7 years of experience in the mental health field. Susan has always had a passion for serving others and decided to return to school after having children of her own to pursue a Master of Social Work (MSW). After graduating from Fordham University, she became a counselor in a residential program where she worked with clients who were struggling with a myriad of mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and substance abuse. Susan provided both individual as well as group therapy and helped to carry on the agency’s mission of reducing the barriers to treatment as well as de-stigmatizing mental health and addiction.

Susan's approach to therapy is multifaceted as she believes that each individual has their own unique story and therefore the course of treatment is individualized to meet the specific needs of her clients, keeping in mind what stage of change they are in, their life stages, and personal challenges. She utilizes evidence-based modalities such as dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and motivational interviewing.

Susan is passionate about her work and she is a strong advocate of educating her clients and their loved ones regarding the struggles with mental health and addiction issues and how these challenges may impact each other and their support systems.

Get to know Susan

Why did you decide to become a counselor?

I became a counselor because I want to be able to provide hope, to let clients know that there are people out there that want to listen to them and not be judged but rather feel accepted and part of a larger community.

What types of clients do you work with best?

Those who are willing and those who are not so sure about therapy.

What’s one thing you wish all clients knew?

One thing I wish all clients knew is that we all have the answers to our issues within us they just may need a little dusting off or peeling of layers to get to them.

Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?

It offers the clients the flexibility to receive treatment online in the comfort of their own homes or in person.

What inspires you?

My clients inspire me each and every day, I am so humbled by their bravery and the ability to trust me with their thoughts, desires, wishes, failures and accomplishments.

What can clients expect in their first session with you?

Honesty, sincerity, a nonjudgmental approach, a sprinkling of humor and feeling heard.

What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?

I want to begin to establish a therapeutic alliance, creating a safe environment where the client will know that they will not be judged but rather supported and heard.

What do you do for fun/on your time off?

Crossfit, crafting, reading and spending time with family and friends.

What’s one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?

My ability to laugh and to be flexible.
