Dianne: My go-to approach for helping people in online therapy is to try to connect with the client by using a personal approach. I do this by creating conditions for trust and practicing collaborative communication. I find that by actively listening, the client feels that they have a safe place to talk about whatever they are having issues with in their lives.
Billi Jo: My go-to approach for helping people in online therapy is helping people find and understand their own inner conflicts, personal values, and personal strengths. I find the best benefit in helping clients focus on finding solutions to their individual problems and separating themselves from the problem.
Dianne: I teach tools in online therapy by verbalizing or narrating what I am thinking about or how I am sensing how my client might be feeling as we interact. Following this up with curious and open questions to check my observations has not only helped me learn to read and listen to my client in this different medium, but has also assisted the client in becoming more aware of these things. It has made the unspoken more explicit.
Billi Jo: I teach the following tools in online therapy:
Dianne: I know a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy when there are changes in their moods or symptoms. For instance, if they started therapy to more effectively manage anxiety, track their mood periodically throughout therapy, and provide information on how their anxiety levels have changed throughout the therapy process.
Billi Jo: I know a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy when a client returns to therapy eager to express what they have processed/learned about their issue and/or themselves and wants to continue to learn and understand themselves and their problems better.
Dianne: Clients can supplement their time in online therapy with journaling, using a emotions wheel to identify their emotions, and by using relaxation and breathing techniques regularly.
Billi Jo: Clients can supplement their time in online therapy by utilizing homework skills and reporting back on how these skills were helpful or not helpful. Homework is a collaborative effort between the client and the therapist.
Dianne: To prepare for your first online therapy session, you can make of list of things that you want to gain out of therapy. Also, making a list of issues you are having is another good way to prepare for therapy.
Billi Jo: To prepare for your first online therapy session, you can make a list of problems you are experiencing in life. You can also imagine what it would be like if you woke up tomorrow and your issues in life were more easily manageable.
With Thriveworks, Online therapy is an effective alternative to in-person therapy services in which a client can speak to a Thriveworks therapist remotely via online video conferencing. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person treatment, but they can also provide added benefits like reduced travel time, saving money on transportation or childcare, and increased access to care.
Online therapy works much like traditional in-person therapy but takes place through secure video conferencing. Clients can attend Online therapy from any safe place they choose that has access to the internet, whether that be their home or another easily accessible place. Like in-person treatment, a therapist will work with their client to address their concerns, create goals, and establish an effective treatment plan.
There is no best option for online therapy—instead, it’s best to focus on finding a provider that meets your specific needs and with whom you can form a professional connection with.
Yes, online therapy is just as effetive for many clients as in-person sessions.
Online therapy can last for a few months to years depending on the goals and symptoms of the client. The treatment process will be unique to each client and lend itself to their specific concerns, which means that the time it takes to treat them will always be different. Timing is also up to the client themselves; they are free to stop therapy whenever they please, especially if they feel they have reached their goals and addressed their concerns.
At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state. More information on current self-pay costs is available on our pricing page.
