My approach in family therapy focuses on helping families overcome the effects of alcohol use, substance misuse, prescription medication abuse, and other addictions like gambling. I employ cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing strategies, solution-focused therapy (SFT), and existential therapy. These methods are effective in teaching individuals to manage their emotions through their thoughts, evaluate the pros and cons of substance use, recognize their strengths, and distinguish themselves from their problems.

Meaningful progress in family therapy is evident when a client has reduced their substance use or the time spent on addictive behaviors. This reduction signifies a significant step towards recovery and healthier family dynamics.
Clients can enhance their family therapy experience by attending meetings such as AA, NA, or Al-Anon, and committing to completing therapy homework. Homework is designed as a collaborative task between family members and the therapist, reinforcing skills learned in therapy.
To prepare for their first family therapy session, individuals should compile a list of problems the family is experiencing related to past, present, or current substance use or addictive behaviors. This preparation helps focus the therapy on addressing specific issues and setting goals for recovery.
