What is your go-to approach for family therapy?

My approach in family therapy focuses on helping families overcome the effects of alcohol use, substance misuse, prescription medication abuse, and other addictions like gambling. I employ cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing strategies, solution-focused therapy (SFT), and existential therapy. These methods are effective in teaching individuals to manage their emotions through their thoughts, evaluate the pros and cons of substance use, recognize their strengths, and distinguish themselves from their problems.

What tools do you teach in family therapy?

The tools I teach in family therapy include:

  • Managing emotions through cognitive processes
  • Relapse prevention strategies
  • Evaluating the costs and benefits of substance use
  • Understanding one's value system and reducing negative thoughts
  • Coping skills for symptoms of anxiety and depression
  • Social skills and assertive communication training
  • Techniques for managing cravings and urges
  • Behavior rehearsal and activity scheduling
  • Thought stopping and education on cognitive distortions related to substance use
  • Distinguishing the problem from the person
  • Exploring personal strengths and existential questions

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in family therapy?

Meaningful progress in family therapy is evident when a client has reduced their substance use or the time spent on addictive behaviors. This reduction signifies a significant step towards recovery and healthier family dynamics.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement family therapy?

Clients can enhance their family therapy experience by attending meetings such as AA, NA, or Al-Anon, and committing to completing therapy homework. Homework is designed as a collaborative task between family members and the therapist, reinforcing skills learned in therapy.

What should someone do to prepare for starting family therapy?

To prepare for their first family therapy session, individuals should compile a list of problems the family is experiencing related to past, present, or current substance use or addictive behaviors. This preparation helps focus the therapy on addressing specific issues and setting goals for recovery.

Starting Family therapy

What is family therapy?

Family therapy helps families resolve conflicts and strengthen their relationships. It is led by qualified mental health professionals like psychologists, licensed professional counselors (LPCs), and licensed clinical social workers (LCSWs) who have extensive training in family dynamics and group communication.

How does family therapy work?

Thriveworks family therapists in Jacksonville, FL usually begin by asking what everyone’s goals are for family counseling. Family members may need help with very specific issues or with general relationship functioning. But there are three main purposes in family counseling: to educate, to counsel, and to strengthen. Thriveworks also offers online family therapy and in-person services, so you may all meet in an office together or join a video call from your home depending on everyone’s location and availability.

What is the most effective family therapy?

The most effective form of Family therapy will often depend on the family itself, as there are many types of family therapy for therapists to use as they see fit in order to best meet the needs of their clients. However, one of the most commonly used types of family therapy is structural family therapy (SFT). SFT focuses specifically on family dynamics and interactions, looking at how they shape the relationships and structure present in the family. It can be effectively used to treat a variety of concerns.

How do I know if my family needs therapy?

This answer often looks different to each family that starts family therapy. However, some signs that your family might need to consider family counseling include frequent fights or misunderstandings, constant tension, experiencing loss, behavioral issues, marital issues, divorce, and blended family issues, among others.

What is included in family therapy?

In family therapy, therapists will often start by asking questions and assessing individual and family dynamics. From there, they may employ therapeutic techniques such as structured family therapy, CBT, strategic family therapy, and more depending on the present concerns and conflicts. From there, a therapist will work to open lines of communication between family members and facilitate emotional healing and growth.

What is the success rate of family therapy?

Family therapy can be incredibly successful, with some studies reporting a success rate of almost 90% for improving participants’ emotional and mental health, and around 66% for improving their physical health.

Is family therapy conducted in person or online?

Thriveworks therapists in Jacksonville, FL offer both online family therapy and in-person family therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does family therapy last?

Family therapy is usually short term and solution-focused, with most families accomplishing their goals in 12 sessions or fewer. However, it can also last for longer if the probles at hand are more complex — and that’s okay, too.

Need more help deciding?

The people we are closest to have the ability to cause us a great amount of pain. This is a tough pill to swallow. But the truth is that our family members—our parents, our children, our sisters, and our brothers—know exactly what buttons to press; they know how to get what they want or need from us; they know how to annoy, enrage, and frustrate us to no end. And sometimes this can lead to a major fight or even separation of family members for a short or long period of time.

“The bond that links your true family is not one of blood, but of respect and joy in each other’s life.” –Richard Bach

So, what does one do when there is major discord in their family? The answer to this question will depend on the particular problem and family. Fortunately, working with a family therapist can help you determine the right answer for you and your family. Family counselors have specific skills, training, and experience related to helping peoples through difficult times. They can help you, as they have many other individuals and families, to improve these most important relationships.

If you are in the Jacksonville, FL area, consider working with a family therapist at Thriveworks Jacksonville. We have family counselors and therapists who are ready to help you analyze the problem(s) at hand and put the pieces back together. To schedule your first family counseling appointment, call (904) 567-7203. We can get you all set up for your onsite or online counseling session. And we look forward to it!

Can We Benefit from Working with a Family Counselor?

Family therapy can prove valuable to many families, including those that aren’t getting along as well as those who simply want to improve their relationships. In either case, family therapy can help you to work through stress, pain, mental illnesses, and other difficult times together. To be more specific, family counselors can help you and your family members accomplish the following:

  • Properly grieve the loss of a loved family member
  • Adjust to a new normal after making a major life change
  • Better cope with stressors, such as financial strain
  • Manage rebellion in kids or teenagers
  • Develop greater love and respect for one another

Grief and loss, major life transitions, stress, and parenting issues are common obstacles that stand in the way of a happy, healthy family dynamic. Fortunately, a therapist with the right knowledge and experience can help you work through these challenges and strengthen the family unit.

How Does Family Therapy at Thriveworks Jacksonville Work?

Here at Thriveworks Jacksonville, our family therapists approach every single case with a personalized treatment plan. They will get to know you and your family members, as well as the problems you are experiencing, and then they will come up with an individualized plan that is meant to best help you. That said, you can likely expect for treatment to be short-term, as many families attend an average of 9 session, each lasting about 50-60 minutes. The specifics vary, but you can trust that your Thriveworks therapist will be sure to keep your best interest in mind and at heart.

Often, family therapy treatment uses cognitive behavioral therapy techniques as well as those rooted in psychodynamic therapy. Again, your family therapist will assess your specific needs and then use the techniques that will prove most beneficial to you and your family members.

Jessica Gort is by far the best therapist I’ve ever had. She’s not only met my needs and expectations, she goes above and beyond that. When I first met with Jessica i was newly sober and recently lost my father, I was struggling and had just ended a professional relationship with a prior therapist that couldn’t help me with what I needed at that time. I felt lost and was losing hope until I met her. I expressed my concerns with Jessica and she did everything she could to help me in the ways that I needed, to keep my sobriety and mental health intact during my grieving process. If I could rate her 10 stars I would. She’s amazing. Highly recommend.
