What is your go-to approach for PTSD/trauma therapy?

My go-to approach for helping people in PTSD/trauma therapy is to help the client separate the problem from themselves and lower their startle response back to their personal baseline. I find the best benefit in using cognitive behavioral therapy and narrative therapy because they help the client re-author their story. This can help the client rid themselves of undesirable personal narratives about themselves.

What tools do you teach in PTSD/trauma therapy?

I teach the following tools in PTSD/trauma therapy:

  • Anger management
  • Communication/assertive training
  • Self-monitoring
  • Mindfulness, meditation, and relaxation techniques
  • Changing negative thinking or negative self-talk
  • Coping skills for trauma symptoms
  • Substance abuse relapse prevention

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in PTSD/trauma therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in PTSD/trauma therapy when the client is not avoiding people, places, and things that remind them of the trauma; is experiencing fewer nightmares and better sleep; starts to feel safe again; and has a lower startle response.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement PTSD/trauma therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in PTSD/trauma therapy counseling by practicing their personalized homework in between appointments. Homework is a collaborative effort between the therapist and the client.

What should someone do to prepare for starting PTSD/trauma therapy?

To prepare for their first PTSD/trauma therapy session, someone can come as they are!

Jessica Gort is by far the best therapist I’ve ever had. She’s not only met my needs and expectations, she goes above and beyond that. When I first met with Jessica i was newly sober and recently lost my father, I was struggling and had just ended a professional relationship with a prior therapist that couldn’t help me with what I needed at that time. I felt lost and was losing hope until I met her. I expressed my concerns with Jessica and she did everything she could to help me in the ways that I needed, to keep my sobriety and mental health intact during my grieving process. If I could rate her 10 stars I would. She’s amazing. Highly recommend.
