What is your go-to approach for depression counseling?

My go-to approach for treating depression involves recognizing negative automatic responses that control our emotions and decreasing feelings of inferiority by understanding basic social mistakes and sibling relationships. I find the best benefit in Adlerian therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and solution-focused therapy (SFT).

What tools do you teach in depression counseling?

During sessions, I teach the following tools in anxiety therapy:

  • Recognizing guilt and shame
  • Recognizing existential guilt: choosing not to choose or allowing others to make choices for us
  • Providing education on sibling birth order and how it affects us mentally
  • Becoming aware of one's own strengths
  • Pain management
  • Understanding resistance—argumentative behaviors, seeking to please, and life-limiting patterns
  • Parenting skills
  • Communication/assertiveness training
  • Social skills
  • Behavior rehearsal: practicing new thoughts before an actual situation
  • Coping skills for depression
  • Behavior experiments
  • Thought stopping
  • Challenging stereotypes
  • Exploring personal identity and personal values

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling when they have been becoming more social with spouses, family, and/or friends.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement depression counseling?

Clients can supplement their time in depression counseling by practicing their personalized homework in between appointments. Homework is a collaborative effort between the therapist and the client.

What should someone do to prepare for starting depression counseling?

To prepare for your first depression counseling session, you can make a list of things you would like to talk about when you come to therapy. You can also take a moment to imagine what it would be like if your depression was suddenly removed.

It is absolutely worth going to therapy for depression — depression counseling helps people better manage their symptoms and get back to living happier lives again.

Ms. Gadishaw has helped me grow tremendously as a person. She has helped me learn skills to control my anxiety and depression. Even on days where I would normally hide away in bed, I have gained techniques and tools to keep me functional and going. I am much happier after meeting her. I am forever grateful.
