What is your go-to approach for anxiety therapy?

My go-to approaches for treating anxiety are cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), exposure therapy, dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and motivational interviewing, among other modalities. I find the best benefit in CBT because it helps clients identify and challenge their anxiety-inducing thoughts and behaviors, replacing them with healthier patterns. Exposure therapy is effective because it gradually exposes clients to their fears in a controlled manner, reducing their anxiety response over time. DBT is valuable for its focus on emotional regulation, mindfulness, and distress tolerance, which are crucial for managing anxiety. Motivational interviewing aids in enhancing clients' motivation and commitment to change by exploring and resolving ambivalence. Combining these approaches provides a comprehensive framework for addressing the cognitive, behavioral, and emotional aspects of anxiety.

What tools do you teach in anxiety therapy?

I teach the following tools in anxiety therapy:

  • Cognitive restructuring: Identifying and challenging irrational or harmful thoughts that contribute to anxiety, and replacing them with more balanced thoughts.
  • Exposure techniques: Gradually confronting feared situations or objects in a controlled and systematic way to reduce anxiety over time.
  • Relaxation techniques: Practicing methods such as deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, and guided imagery to manage physiological symptoms of anxiety.
  • Mindfulness and meditation: Teaching clients to focus on the present moment and develop a non-judgmental awareness of their thoughts and feelings.
  • Problem-solving skills: Helping clients develop effective strategies for managing and resolving specific stressors that trigger anxiety.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in anxiety therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in anxiety therapy when they exhibit reduced anxiety symptoms, an increased ability to engage in previously avoided activities, and improved coping skills. Additionally, clients may report fewer panic attacks, decreased overall worry, and a greater sense of control over their anxiety. Observable behavioral changes, such as more social engagement and improved performance at work or school, can also indicate progress.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement anxiety therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in anxiety therapy with:

  • Journaling: Writing down anxious thoughts and feelings to identify patterns and triggers.
  • Physical activity: Engaging in regular exercise to reduce stress and improve overall mental health.
  • Healthy lifestyle choices: Maintaining a balanced diet, getting adequate sleep, and avoiding caffeine and alcohol, which can exacerbate anxiety.
  • Mindfulness practices: Incorporating mindfulness meditation or yoga into their daily routine to enhance relaxation and emotional regulation.
  • Social support: Building and maintaining connections with friends and family to reduce feelings of isolation and provide emotional support.

What should someone do to prepare for starting anxiety therapy?

To prepare for your first anxiety therapy session, you can:

  • Reflect on goals: Think about what you hope to achieve through therapy and any specific issues or situations that trigger your anxiety.
  • Gather medical history: Be ready to share any relevant medical history, including past mental health treatment and current medications.
  • Consider support: Identify trusted individuals who can support you during your therapy journey.
  • Open mind: Approach the process with an open mind and willingness to engage in therapeutic techniques.
  • Self-assessment: Take note of your current symptoms, triggers, and any coping strategies you’ve tried in the past.

Starting Anxiety therapy

What is anxiety therapy?

Anxiety therapy helps people better understand and manage their anxiety. Anxiety therapists at Thriveworks in Chesterfield, VA can develop a treatment plan that will help you better manage your day-to-day anxiety or your anxiety disorder.

How does anxiety therapy work?

Anxiety therapy involves talking to a therapist about symptoms, potential causes, and more. Thriveworks Chesterfield therapists will then work with you to determine where your anxiety might stem from and teach you effective coping mechanisms.

How to deal with anxiety?

One of the best ways to deal with anxiety is to learn about your own anxiety: your symptoms, what triggers it, and what coping mechanisms have been effective in the past. When you learn what your anxiety is tied to, it can help you be mindful of what’s really happening as well as prevent and mitigate symptoms by processing and working through the issue in therapy. Other strategies that have been shown to help manage anxiety are meditation, challenging anxious thoughts, exercising, and journaling.

Symptoms of anxiety

Common symptoms of anxiety include:

  • Sense of impending danger
  • Nervousness/restlessness
  • Trouble focusing
  • Excessive sweating
  • Shaking
  • Headaches
  • Stomach issues
  • Fatigue
  • Panic attacks
  • Increased heart rate

What is the best therapy for anxiety?

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can be incredibly effective in treating anxiety and anxiety disorders. Other effective techniques include exposure therapy, Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and EMDR therapy.

Is anxiety therapy conducted in person or online?

Anxiety therapy is conducted both in person and online, depending on the individual’s preferences and their therapist’s availability. We suggest choosing the option that best suits your needs.

How long does anxiety therapy last?

On average, people can tend to attend 15 to 20 session of anxiety therapy (five or more months). However, this number is heavily dependent on the type of anxiety that’s being treated and its severity, with many choosing to attend anxiety therapy for a longer period of time to ensure its effectiveness long-term.

Is therapy worth it for anxiety?

Yes, it is worth going to therapy for anxiety. If you are struggling with regular anxious thoughts and feelings that are affecting your day-to-day life or you suspect that you have an anxiety disorder, you should seek expert anxiety help.

I was so nervous about going to therapy being that I’ve never foresaw a reason or need to go… I had encountered a very traumatic accident at work and it left me confused and depressed about my career path! I can honestly say if it weren’t for Ariane I’d still be left battling confusion and and depression from my accident. I’ve suffered anxiety and panic attacks from the incident but Ari has given me helpful tips to get through my tough times when I’m experiencing those attacks. I’m just so grateful to have encountered a very experienced and understanding counselor who genuinely has my best interest at a full recovery at heart!

This was my first therapy experience. I was in desperate need for help. Jenee was my therapist for a year and I can’t overstate how incredibly helpful she has been. She met me where I was mentally and helped me to find myself and healthy/productive ways of dealing with my everyday struggles. I’m a completely different and happier person thanks to her hard work.
