What is your go-to approach for depression counseling?

My go-to approach for treating depression is to start with where a client is. Most of us have trouble providing ourselves with validation that our feelings are real and we are worthy. Once more self-validation is happening, we tackle the judgment that often accompanies the newfound skill of recognizing negative thinking and thought distortions. We also work towards improving our environment, sleep, and food intake.

What tools do you teach in depression counseling?

I tend to use a two-pronged approach to teaching tools in depression counseling. First, take some control of your environment: Is your sleep environment conducive to getting a better night's sleep? If not, how can it be improved? Are you eating regularly, and if not, how can you begin to get more frequent and better nutrition? The second prong is the use of CBT.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling?

When people begin to make meaningful progress in depression counseling, it often starts to show in their facial expressions and their posture. They are often increasingly able to catch their depressed thinking patterns and change them with minimal negative self-judgment.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement depression counseling?

Clients can supplement their time in depression counseling by spending time learning mindfulness skills and practicing CBT and/or DBT skills. If medication is prescribed, take it on a daily basis while keeping the prescriber informed of any negative side effects.

What should someone do to prepare for starting depression counseling?

To prepare for your first depression counseling session, think through your life, and notice any patterns of depression that you've had in the past. That kind of information can be really important in terms of getting an appropriate diagnosis, as well as finding patterns that impact your mood.

Depression and Anxiety Counseling—Counselors and Therapists in Westborough, MA

This world is full of trouble. Stress at work, fighting at home, sickness, disease, war, politics; we rarely have worry-free days. Everyone feels stress and worry at some time in life, but not everyone develops depression or anxiety disorders. These disorders are generally diagnosed when worry or sadness interfere with the tasks of daily living. It becomes difficult to maintain relationships, be successful at work, and make decisions. When your life becomes overwhelming and depression and anxiety are taking over the joy you once had, it’s time to connect with a Thriveworks Westborough counselor or therapist.

These disorders are not always easy to diagnose, or to treat, but with the help of a Thriveworks Counseling in Westborough depression or anxiety counselor, it is possible to find relief. We have trained psychologists, ready to partner with you on this journey of healing and recovery.

Dealing with Anxiety

“Anxiety is one of those emotions that we all feel at some point,” explains Stephanie Wuebbens, a Licensed Psychologist at our Westborough office. “Remember how you felt the first time you had to stand up in front of your class and give a presentation out loud, for instance. Worry and stress are related to anxiety; worry is a bit less intense, and stress is both more chronic and more sneaky. Anxiety gets in our way when it begins to negatively impact our lives: we start avoiding things that make us anxious, or some of the physical symptoms begin to happen frequently, such as an upset stomach or a pounding heart.”

There are many different types of anxiety issues and disorders. These include:

  • School phobia (particularly in children)
  • Generalized anxiety disorder
  • Social anxiety
  • Phobias
  • Panic disorder
  • Agoraphobia (fear of specific places or situations)
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Separation Anxiety

Understanding Depression

Wuebbens explains: “Depression includes a complex set of symptoms depending on its root cause. It’s not merely sadness or grief, or it may have started as sadness or grief that became deeper and more chronic. It can involve physical symptoms such as difficulty sleeping (or sleeping too much), overeating or not feeling hungry, a feeling of deep fatigue. It often involves cognitive symptoms such as self-deprecating thoughts, thinking about the negatives over and over, seeing very little good in your life, and at its worst, thoughts about self-harm.”

There are many different options in the treatment for depression. Medication can sometimes be helpful, as well as talk therapy, and establishing a healthy routine for your daily life. “Therapy can help sort through the feelings of overwhelm, begin to change habits that may have lapsed such as good sleep routines or healthy eating, and change thinking patterns to change the way you feel. If depression is a result of bad events in your life, you can begin to make sense of those events. If there’s ‘no good reason’ for your depression, the actual reasons for the depression can be explored,” says Wuebbens.
